Hello. I have built my computer in June 2014, and so far it has been working very well. That is, until about a month ago, when I disassembled the PC to clean stuff up, reapply the thermal grease, etc. After that, the PC got a lot louder. I checked HWMonitor, and these were the results after 15 minutes of playing Skyrim:

P5TlbW4.png

As you can see, CPU temperatures are below 65 degrees, even under 90% load. So there's no real reason for the Cooler to go nuts and work like a mini drill. It has speed of about 2200 RPM, and I don't really know if it's much, but I assume it is. As for the GPU (MSI Radeon R9 270) it sits at around 950 RPM when idle, while the CPU cooler works at almost 1300 RPM when idle, and over 2100 RPM when under load. Is there a way to force it to keep under certain speed, so that it doesn't go crazy, at the cost of a few extra degrees? It's really annoying.

P.S.

It's a stock Intel cooler

I checked multiple times, and I'm sure there are no cables or anything in any of the fans in my PC

Use your motherboard's fan control to change the fan speed settings. sounds like you might have reset the bios, or plugged it into a different header or something. just turn the fan profile or curve down.

It's just an i5 4460. stock is decent enough for now.

Uhh, it must've been over 1,5 years since I last opened BIOS. I don't like it there, there's too much room for an unexperienced person like me to really screw things up. I set all 3 fans to Silent mode, and the temperature still keeps below 65 degrees, while the speed fell from 2200 RPM to 1700 RPM. It's still a bit too loud for me, and I'm gonna change it to something else soon, but for now it seems like it helped. Thanks :)

May I recommend a cryorig cooler, nearly silent and high performing.

I don't really care about high performance, because as long as it keeps below 70 degrees (which even stock cooler can accomplish) I'm cool. Now it's the looks and the silence that matters. Originally I planned to get Cooler Master 212 Evo, but I don't know anything about it's noise volume. What do you think about Be Quiet! stuff?

Cryorig is often cheaper than the Hyper 212, and much quieter. A higher performance CPU Cooler means you can run the fans at lower speeds, meaning quieter operation.

Oh, well in that case, what specific model do you recommend that is cheaper than Hyper 212 Evo?

EDIT

Okay, thanks for the info. I'll check some models out and compare them.

The M9i, I have one keeping my i7 below 60 most of the time, even under pretty serious load. If you're in the UK, it can be bought for around 17 pound from ebuyer.

Only by 3 kr, it's like 0,25 of a pound or something

Eh, still technically higher performing, and comes with great thermal paste. Can be a bit of a pain to fit the backplate though, but not enough to avoid it.

70c is pretty low. You're fine up to 90c at load.
