Linux?

Some form of Ubuntu, Mint, elementary OS, openSUSE are all decent choices.

I'd recommend you start with Mint.  It's a nice way to ease into Linux.  After you've been using it for a while and are comfortable with the command line and the general organization of a Linux installation, you can look into Arch for a super customizeable, fairly minimalistic distro that everyone who uses it will usually swear by.  But, it definitely requires a good knowledge of Linux as a whole, and is somewhat more demanding on the user than most other distros.  There's also Debian, which is probably the big dog of Linux distros (Mint is ultimately based on it, as are most of the distros out there--both by number of distros and number of users).  Debian's stable branch is super stable, but at the cost of having slightly older software.  Debian also tends to be one of the (slightly) less user-friendly distros, so maybe get used to Linux in general before trying it out.  Then there's Gentoo, where you compile everything--including the kernel and core OS utilities--completely from scratch.  Since everything is compiled from source code, you can change everything about your system at the code level before compiling it, but you'll spend a lot of time waiting for things to compile in the long run.  Definitely not a beginner distro by any stretch.  There are also some of the more special-purpose distros like Kali, which is geared towards penetration testing and digital forensics and that sort of thing.

 

But, I think Mint is the best place to start.  It's easy to install, lightweight, and is very good about letting you choose how much you want to interact with the computer.  You can either just use it with minimal command line use and minimal interaction with the guts of the system, or you can get up to your elbows in that stuff if you want.  Once you have a bit of experience, you can always jump ship if you see something you think is more interesting.  Mint is also fairly light as Linux distros go, so it should run well even on older hardware.

I'm willing to set up a dual boot config with both Windows and Linux.

Now I want to know what Linux distro should I get? It'll be my first time using Linux properly, and I'm going to mainly use it for programming/coding.

 

Any recommendations?

Well, I try to be thorough in my answers.  :)

 

A lot of people use and like Elementary, but I haven't used it so I can't say too much about it.  It's another one of the many beginner-friendly distros, but I think it's more oriented towards the Mac look-and-feel, where Mint is generally more Windows-looking.

 

I'd recommend the Cinnamon version.  For one, Cinnamon is a great desktop environment--sleek, reasonably lightweight, pretty good overall layout, though I do have a few, mostly minor, complaints--and for two, it's the one the Mint people actively develop and update.  MATE and Cinnamon are pretty similar visually, but MATE is based on the GNOME 2 desktop, while Cinnamon is based on GNOME 3, so it has more modern code running underneath it.  Of course, you can always install a different desktop environment--KDE is always super popular, XFCE is a nice lightweight-but-feature-rich choice, and LXDE is as lightweight as they come, but a bit less feature-rich than most others.  The Mint Cinnamon version is the one they really advertise, though, much like Ubuntu with its default Unity environment.  So I'd go with Cinnamon for now, and you can always install other DEs if you want to play with them.

Elementary is great for a daily driver, even if your not into macs. I would recommend Ubuntu Gnome, recently I tried the Gnome desktop after using Unity a few years and I fell in love with it. Honestly it really comes down to what OP thinks looks best because all them have similar ease of use and usability.
