I had some fun this evening. Considering the fact that I got a partially dead motherboard/cpu, I shouldn't be as happy as I am now, but let me just share this story with you :)

I decided to swap the old Pentium e2160 in my NAS for a more powerful e8400. I installed everything and it worked just fine, but one thing was strange. The CPU fan ramped up to full speed and stayed there until I powered off the system. "Maybe I forgot to install thermal paste" was my first thought. But there was enough thermal paste. So I powered on the system again and checked for the temperatures. 24°C and 25°C. So I powered off the system and tightened all the screws of my CPU cooler. Same problem. But it wasn't a problem of my CPU fan. Every fan I installed in my system instantly ramped up to full speed. I was pretty annoyed because the CPU fan in this build is LOUD. Really loud. In the end, I just soldered together a 5V-source to plug in my CPU fan so it can't spin at full speed. And now it works like a charm. because of the "low-power" CPU, temperatures never rise above 60°C. Thank god I had some spare connectors laying around :D

K coo- why not just get another fan to mount on it?

OP mention that every fan he tried went up to 100 % speed

You know how it is, the cow goes "moo", the dog goes "woof" and the gamer goes "The PvP is unbalanced."

@TheRandomness Every Fan I tried instantly ramped up to 100%, even the other case fans. I had no other choice than to crank down the voltage of my fan... This could've been done much better, but wasn't in the mood to solder a custom PWM-controller-board...
