FreeNAS or Ubuntu server?

Go to solution Solved by Godlygamer23,

I am planning tonuse jails, I heard it's possible to do it with Ubuntu but I had some trouble finding out how, so that is one of the reasons I'm leaning towards freenas.

Since jails are an integrated part of FreeNAS, I would probably just use FreeNAS.

Hi everyone,

I am planning to build my own server. I want to use it for storage, a plex media server and maybe a teamspeak server.

I think I will be using FreeNAS, but I was wondering if anyone could give me a reason to (not) use it over Ubuntu server.

Is there any real difference in performance/possibilities?

Thank you

I have not used either. You would sound cooler if you said you used Ubuntu Server. Is this just for internal use or outside your network as well?

I like FreeNAS personally, especially while using Jails.

Haha it sounds better indeed. Mostly internal but if possible I would like to be able to ftp to it from outside my network though.

I am not sure if FreeNAS uses SFTP (FTP which has SSH encryption), but if it does you should use it for external connections. It is a lot safer than normal plain text FTP.

You can use TLS for FTP connections.

Or that ^

SSH is still more secure right? Not like anyone would want to look at his family photo's or porn  or whatever he is transferring

I don't think it's more secure. I think it just adds some extra features, but your research may prove different.

Ah right, that was just from the top of my head. Meh, they are both better than standard FTP I guess  :lol:

@Bittenfleax @Godlygamer23

Thanks for all the information, I will look more deeply into the way I can reach my data from outside my network to see if one is better than the other.
