Hi, I want to add ram to my notebook and i have a doubt over what i should add. My notebook is a Msi Gt72. Which comes with 16gb of ddr4 (2 8gb modules). It has a max supported ram of 64gb (4 slots) and i would like to add 16gb of ram. Should i add 2 8gb modules or 1 16gb module? I am inclined to the 1 16gb module since it doesn't occupied all all my slots and I can add more ram in a future.

2X8GB.

Preferably the same brand/model as the two sticks already in there.

This means you'll be able to run in dual channel correctly, rather than one dual channel pair and one random stick, lol.

I believe this is how it works, but if someone who knows what they're talking about wants to correct me, go ahead.

Hope this helps :)

2x8gb

I really doubt you are going to need more than 16gb of RAM unless using a RAMDISK or doing something insane like running 30 copies of crysis 3 at once

not everyone uses his laptop only for gaming... video editing or 3D stuff can eat a lot of ram, but 32 GB should be really enough. I'd get 2x8GB because of dual channel capabilities

I know that, the crysis thing was clearly a joke, I have edited high bitrate 1080p and some 4k footage in premier and after effects on a laptop with 8gb of ram

still 16gb is beyond what 99% of people need even for high end 3d rendering and after effects compositing

If the OP is doing that, sure there might be a benefit of going for 32gb or something, but considering they didnt say anything about it, I find it hard to recommend they spend the money on it

Thank you for your responses. I do use my computer for video editing as well as motion graphics and 3d animation. Currently 16gb are enough... most of the time but as time goes by the video footage i edit comes with higher bitrate (i know i can use proxys but I work with a really tight schedule that  makes it impossible most of the times) and the animations i do are more complex.

So you recommend going for a total of 4 8gb modules for a total of 32gb because of the dual channel. Instead of 2 8gbs modules and 1 16g module. Do you guys believe that if i buy a 16gb module instead the speed difference would  be noticeable.

I've done that on a laptop with 4gb of ram. ^-^

The difference in speed will most definitely NOT be noticeable.

It's against it if it's using the quote to twist words in a harmful way. Not really in the context of what was already a joke.

Actually, no.

Quoting another user but editing their quote

Was the OLD rule. But since we have a new CoC which replaces the old one, and that rule was not included in the new one.........you're technically alright via a loophole.
