Hi i was wondering, i have been told that overcloking shortens the hardwares life, but i was wondering is there an average (15% or whatever)? I would think it also depends on how hot it gets, but lets say im putting a 240 mm radiatior on and that allows me to keep the card on a reasonable temperature. What would it take off of its lifespan on average (newer card like gtx 970 or 980 ti)?

well, it alwas depends on how lucky you are with the silicon lotery...

 

i've seen OCed systems live a long and healthy life, i've also seen OCed system die within a year.

if you want to be sure about not destroying your component, dont do any crazy stuff with it.

There is no solid answer to this, not even an average lifespan decrease as there are many things to consider. Everything from the oc voltage, the temps of the card, mobo, the quality of the mobo, and even the variations between supposedly identical chips. But, crucially, ocing will shorten a component's lifespan however, if you do a proper oc, being reasonable with voltages and clock speeds, you will change your computer long before the end of a components lifespan.

voltage kills processors. something about quantum mechanics, electrons getting stuck or something

 

the higher the voltage, the faster they make a hole

 

so undervolted processors last 10+ years.

dis shiet get's destroyed pretty fast under high voltages, so yeah, the higher the electron momentum, the more they will "distort" the complicated nanostructures that we have in todays CPUs/GPUs (it still takes a lot of time in order for this process to occur, but still, it shortens the lifespan of microchips)
