I think it was pretty fun. I played this archer named Ashe. My two brothers were playing in the same room. We had one of their friends playing while talking to us over Skype and the fifth person was a random. This is a fun game to play when you've got friends. To do otherwise sounds pretty boring. It's pretty simple, but I found the upgrade shop at your team's home base kind of confusing because I just bought random things.

Yeah we were only playing vs bots. I have to imagine we would be squished otherwise.

Huge learning curve on the game:  Items (at the upgrade shop), map awareness/strategy, laning phase, champ selection, positioning in team fights... it is a game you will have to play a long time to grasp even moderately.

Take your time with it, have fun.  I played Ashe from level one to level 30, at least 99% of the time.

I wouldn't worry about not knowing what to buy when you 1st start out. Be warned though. Games in this genre take a fairly long time to learn so you have to decide if you're willing to spend all that time learning the in and outs.

They honestly look so similar, but I've heard DOTA is harder. It would be harder to play since we've all gotten into LoL it's going to be impossible to get all of us to embrace changing. Plus LoL seems to be more popular as far as Esports and streaming is concerned.

Dota is the e-sports game.  The professional players rank in more money than any other game.  LoL is more popular due to how casual it is.

Think I might be poking a beehive here by continuing, but how are the graphics on DOTA? Are they better? What things would you say make DOTA less casual?

I mean just playing LoL the gameplay is easy to pick up, hard to master. I don't see what DOTA can offer me that LoL isn't filling. An elitist attitude?

A bias.  Someone that has chosen to play DOTA will defend their decision.  Same goes for someone that chose to play LoL.  It was a joke.

The two games are similar in genre, but each has evolved into it's own unique flavor.

If you have a good disposition, you will learn to deal with the shit-talking in game to a level where it does not affect your performance.  I have had raging idiots scream and yell.  They expected a loss and that was their way of coping.

I either ignore and focus on my game, or say a few quick words and focus on my game.  Their tune changes when/if the game turns around and I personally find watching the transition f*cking hilarious  :D

LoL quite possibly has the worst community on the planet.  I don't know what it is about that game but everybody I've encountered just rages, complains, or trolls the hell out of everyone else to the point where it's pretty much not worth playing.

How is the "pay to play/win" situation in Dota2 vs LoL?

It seems in LoL I can unlock any character for free if I'm willing to invest a bit of time playing the game.

In dota2 you can play every character straight away and all the items are purely cosmetic.

And if you get lucky and get a good item (items drop randomly at the end of a match) you can sell it for steam funds.

So basically, in dota you have access to all heroes straight away while in league you need to either pay real money or save up ip to unlock them over time.

In league you need to pay real money to get skins while in dota2 you can get free items at the end of every match (you can pay real money to get what you want too). And the cool thing about dota2 is that you can mix different skins and sets because each hero has few slots (head, chest, weapon etc.) so you can customize your look much more than just by buying a skin.

In general, neither of these 2 games are pay to win but in dota2 you simply get more options.

And btw. games in dota2 are usually much longer than in league (60 minutes long games aren't uncommon).

I'd recommend quitting while you can, both games seem a little bit boring at the beginning, but after few games you'll get addicted.

You clearly haven't seen the CS:GO community. League community is extremely polite and positive compared to a bunch of racist and sexist 14 years old kids on Counter Strike.

LoL's graphics are a different style to Dota's, so it is kinda hard to compare them.  Dota got updated to Source 2 recently, and a lot of things look pretty great.  We got new weather effects, and a new desert style for the map.  So I think the graphics, while a different style, are more up to date.

Why Dota 2 is better:

  • Denies.  You can deny your creeps, towers, and your teammates if you get the last hit.  This will stop the opposing team from getting all of the exp/gold.
  • Versatile meta.  The meta is always changing within Dota.  The same thing that won you games last week could be changed the very next.
  • Most of the champion's spells in LoL are very spammable.  They are usually low mana cost with a short CD.  They are pretty predictable and dying to them is unheard of.  You can spam all you want, but you know you aren't getting a kill unless someone comes to gank.  (or you're in a low ranked game)
  • Spells in Dota, for the most part, are the opposite.  You have skills that take 75% of a hero's mana pool, but they are usually are more effective for killing.  So this boils down to your placement as a hero, which is everything in Dota.  If you are not placed correctly, that could very well be what costs you your life, or your game.  You place yourself where you think you will not get killed, and see what your opponents do.
  • Dying.  In Dota 2 dying can mean a lot.  You lose gold, which can set you back a couple of minutes for a very important item, which can cost you the game.  Alternatively you also give gold to the one(s) who kill you, which could be little or a lot depending on your farm.  (which could cost you the game)
  • Items.  Big one here.  Items in Dota 2 actually do something and are very different.  Knowing what items your opponents have is very crucial, because most of them are activatable.  You have a BKB which grants 100% spell immunity for up to 10 seconds, or a Blink Dagger that allows you to teleport every 14 seconds.  Most LoL items are passive, usually for preventing/dealing damage or movement speed.
  • Fog of War.  In Dota if there is no line of sight between your hero or allied unit unto an enemy, then that enemy is seen.  The ability of being seen is manipulative as well.  Trees can create FoW, but various items and heroes and destroy  them/render them useless.  In LoL there is just brush, which are static.  All those places boil down to is warding/scouting, and you're fine.

There are some other things, but that explains a lot I think.  LoL is more casual, which isn't necessarily bad (I think it is), which is why more people play it.  Dota 2 require more skill, and has a high risk/high reward system to it.

FTFY

None of your reasons confirms DOTA is better (objectively), and some of them are flat out wrong.

Since it is a game, have you factored in "having fun"?  Just wondering.

It seems you need to believe you made the right choice... where no wrong choice is evident.  ;)

You are not respecting what it takes to support a (E) sport.  LoL has production infrastructure and a high population of "casual" gamers.  Being "casual-friendly" and professionally competitive are not two mutually exclusive elements.  They are inter-connected.

It is still the most popular game.  LoL's potential in the professional scene is more robust than DOTA.  Now don't go all crazy fan on me.  DOTA is a well established competitive game as well.  LoL is just on top... it has been that way for a while now.

Fun is the only way to go, unless there is money involved.  Then business plans reign supreme, fun falls down the list of priorities.
