So at the moment I was planning to get the Fractal Design R4. Since the airflow is pretty reduced since of a front door I need the best airflow possible at the less noise. I was thinking of getting an extra R2 silent 140mm fan but saw threads saying the airflow was not so great. So I am wondering if I should buy 3 new fans or just 1. And which one? I was thinking of the noctuas.

Noiseblocker make some very good fans, Silverstone are also ones to look for.

Like I said Fractal fans are quiet but don't move any air. You would be better off with a Gelid Silent 14 which is about the same price, if not, cheaper than the Silent Series. Noctua A14s are great fans as well. If you wanted to go for absolute silence then get Be Quiet! Silent Wings 2 fans.

Ok but should I change all of them? Or just the intakes one?

I would just get 3, 2 for the intake and one for the exhaust. Or else you will have fans that move air in but the Fractal fan can't move it out.

Ok well I will go with the Gelid ones, since they black and white and you said they pretty good. Have you tried them personally? Or anyone else?

Nope but Tator Tot at OCN has been doing a fan roundup from god knows when and if he says a fan is good, it's good.

Hello again, MidnightNarwhal,

We were writing in another thread about the dark rock 2 CPU cooler. BTW did i mention that i have the Define R4 aswell? :D

So what i did was move the two included fans to the front and get an extra 140mm fan for the back (Corsair 140 Quiet Edition in my case). The included fans are alright. They are quiet and together they move enough air for all the components. With this setup I have positive air pressure inside the case.

BTW. did you think about putting the SSD on the backplate and the HDD in a 5.25" bay? This way you should be abled to remove all the drive cages and provide decent air flow, at least that's what i did. :D

who cares...

Yeah but I won't have a SSD :P How do you calculate positive or negative air pressure?

Intake Air - Outtake Air = Total Air flow. If result is positive it's positive airflow, and vice versa.

Just add together the airflow that's given on the manufacturers website. E.g. the Define R4 comes with 2 of the Silent Series R2 140mm. I have put them both in the front, so that's 2x66 cfm = 132 cfm intake. The Corsair AF 140mm at the back is shoving air out, so 132cfm - 67.8cfm = 64.2 cfm positive air pressure.

You can go with no SSD aswell. Little tipp: make sure to create 2 partitions, one with ~128 GB and one with the rest of your storage. Treat the small partition as if it was an SSD and you should have no problem upgrading an SSD later by simply using some data migration software. You, know, you don't have to seperate data manually then.

Ok  thanks Mr Cat :D I think I will buy just buy 3 GELID silent series. I was thinking of going for corsair fans, but saw the GELID are beter, at least in the tech specs. And since I change one fan, I can't resist to change all the others xD Also thanks for the SSD tip HDD.  :P

Hey I just thought something. If I get 3 fans, I will have a total of 5. So do you recommend me adding the extra 2 or just keep them apart?

I'd just put 2 front, one back. By opening the two slots in the top, where the noise dampening material sits, you'd sacrifice on the high noise isolation of the Define R4.

I'd prefer a straight airflow from the front to the back. More isn't needed. I assume you won't have an overclocked extreme edition CPU and SLI 780s in there so theres no point for more airflow.

I assume you are currently planning a PC, so if you have more questions about the R4 or anything like that you could also PM me.

who cares...
