The human body is built specifically for the purpose of long-distance running. That's imo the best exercise you can get, so long as you do it properly. Front-foot strike, let your foot arch absorb the shock instead of your legs. And don't sprint, it doesn't have to be fast.

You should look into some five-finger shoes, Apparently they really help you to run properly.

 

Two of my toes are webed so I can't use them. :(

I have problems with my shins thanks to my time in the Army, but i'm still good to actually run.

I like running long distance (use to run 100-150 miles a week during my undergraduate years), but I am pretty intensive in all my exercises. Ever since I started bodybuilding / powerlifting I can't run fast for a long period of time. After a few sub 5 minute miles my knees will ache. I switched to cycling as a primary cardio activity since I can go all out without any knee pain.

My dad had trouble with his knees after his time in the army, but these five fingers really helped him out a lot.

 

He runs marathons now.

I actually do have a pair, and they are great for that end. I see too many shoe companies advertising running shoes with like, two inches of cushioning under the heel, suggesting that a heel strike is a natural way to run. Debunking that claim is really fun - politely ask a shoe salesman making such a claim to take off his shoes and try it in bare feet. If he's stupid enough to do it once, he won't be stupid enough to do it again.

 

The best way to run, tbh, is barefoot, but building the calluses up on your feet to the point where you can run on gravel with no pain or injury takes a lot of time and suffering.

Nooooo. They don't have any cushion or support so if you run on anything but grass or dirt you destroy your feet. My dad's friend ran a giant marathon it was like 50 miles in those and he couldn't walk for a month or so. But they help with grip a ton

I actually do have a pair, and they are great for that end. I see too many shoe companies advertising running shoes with like, two inches of cushioning under the heel, suggesting that a heel strike is a natural way to run. Debunking that claim is really fun - politely ask a shoe salesman making such a claim to take off his shoes and try it in bare feet. If he's stupid enough to do it once, he won't be stupid enough to do it again.

 

The best way to run, tbh, is barefoot, but building the calluses up on your feet to the point where you can run on gravel with no pain or injury takes a lot of time and suffering.

My heel never hit's the ground when sprinting, all the power and sprint starts from the front ball part of your foot, if carrying weight my feet will do a curve motion.

I tend to run near the center of my foot. My shoes are pretty well cushioned though so it doesn't feel natural to run on the ball of my foot.

You can get them with a little protection, but the point of them is to have a barefoot like run.

That's just how much your dad's friends feet have deteriorated from being pampered by cushioning and support for all those years. If he had trained without the padded shoes for long enough, then he wouldn't have destroyed his feet. But he presumably jumped straight into them and started running, so of course it hurt. But that's how your feet get stronger and tougher. If you look at people who spend their time running from place to place - say for instance, people in african villages with no modern modes of transport - they'll either run in very thin shoes or none at all. The human foot is designed to run on any terrain with no cushion or support - the arch of your foot takes care of the impact, and the skin underneath toughens to protect it from rocks and things.

That's just how much your dad's friends feet have deteriorated from being pampered by cushioning and support for all those years. If he had trained without the padded shoes for long enough, then he wouldn't have destroyed his feet. But he presumably jumped straight into them and started running, so of course it hurt. But that's how your feet get stronger and tougher. If you look at people who spend their time running from place to place - say for instance, people in african villages with no modern modes of transport - they'll either run in very thin shoes or none at all. The human foot is designed to run on any terrain with no cushion or support - the arch of your foot takes care of the impact, and the skin underneath toughens to protect it from rocks and things.

Won't lie not ran in a good 10 months properly, my feet are tough as fuck, i have layers of skin on the front and back of my foot, the outer sides are also thickly layered.

My heel never hit's the ground when sprinting, all the power and sprint starts from the front ball part of your foot, if carrying weight my feet will do a curve motion.

Of course, of course. Ever tried sprinting heel-first? Doesn't work, and it's kinda funny to watch people try.

I was just about to say that. Wearing shoes with good support is actually bad as it makes your arches weak. That is why I only wear skater flat shoes. Oh and because they are wide enough for my feet
