Raspberry Pi

I didn't know where to put this so sorry if this is the wrong section. :) This wouldn't be replacing my current pc, just thought it might be something fun to tinker around with.

 

I have a couple of questions about the Raspberry pi.

 

1. Where would I buy this in Canada? And what model is the best?

 

2. Is the Raspberry Pi able to do basic web surfing and video playback?

 

3. Would this make a good "emulator station"?

1. Pretty much online is always best bet

 

2. Yes

 

3. Sure but only for basic emulation

Not too sure if they're any good though, but I've been looking around to buy a Pi too.

 

You should probably go for the latest and greatest rPi2

1. I'm gonna disagree with Nonco here and say that if you find a electronics store locally that sells them it might be cheaper taking into consideration the shipping.

 

RaspPi's are tiny, shipping would be basically nothing. Whereas a local electronic shop would be paying for shipping of bulk items + taking into consideration they need to make profit off of selling these, so they would end up being pricier than online+shipping in the end. Online for this specific item would pretty much definitely be the best bet.

I got mine off of Element 14 but Adafruit is also a good place to look.

Web surfing yes mostly but if a site needs special plugins than support is hit and miss. I dont think it handles YouTube too well in browser but there are dedicated YouTube playing apps for it.

Emulation up to PS1/N64 works well. Beyond that I dont think emulation is efficient enough to run anything more demanding.

RaspPi's are tiny, shipping would be basically nothing. Whereas a local electronic shop would be paying for shipping of bulk items + taking into consideration they need to make profit off of selling these, so they would end up being pricier than online+shipping in the end. Online for this specific item would pretty much definitely be the best bet. 

Well, I suppose an anecdote won't change your mind or work for everyone. Buying at a physical store was the way I got my Pi though.

1. Online is easiest. The original, I bought a kit off of eBay, and for the Pi 2 that I have, I purchased a kit from Amazon. 

 

2. Yes; it has no problems doing basic tasks if you're comfortable with the Linux OSes. As for video playback, that's essentially its main usage I'd imagine, through OpenELEC or Kodi.

 

3. For retro games, yes.
