If you disconnect your laptop screen while using the TV it will decrease the temps, yes.

does cooling pad actually work ? if i use hdmi to connect to the tv and turn my laptop screen off not  does this reduce the temperature?

if you are skilled enough i would open up that thing and clean it, sometimes its just a dust carpet that is blocking the exhaust so all the heat stays in the case.

A cooling pad is also a good choice if it generates a lot of heat, but again cleaning should be the first step in my oppinion

It would cool screen, not base temp. TV still requires GPU to render image, maybe even more than laptops own screen if resolution is higher.

As for cooling pads, yes they do help. You may need to get one with large fan if laptop has very limited ventilation holes at bottom.
