Switching Audio Output without Unplugging?

Go to solution Solved by TheKDub,

I'm finalizing a build and will be using an Asus z170 Deluxe MB (windows 10). I would like to keep my headphones and speakers both plugged in and then be able to select which output to actually use. I would prefer not to use the front panel headset connector but have everything plugged into the back of the board. Is this even possible or should I just have the speakers plugged into the board and resign myself to using the headset through the front audio?

Make that, get an aux cord, plug one end into your pc, the other into the jack connected to the center three connectors of the switch, then plug your headphones into another of the jacks, then speakers into the other.

Then all you have to do is flip a switch to change where the audio goes to.

I did that, it worked pretty nicely, I've got it hot glued under my desk right now so I just reach down, flip the switch, and go from headphones to speakers, or vise versa just like that.,

I personally have speakers that I can plug headphones into, but I don't know if that is an option for you.

how about clicking the little arrow under the speaker icon and changing the output device...

Yes, you could plug them into your speakers (if possible) or just change the default sound output device.  This can probably be done either through the builtin windows utility, or it's possible your motherboard's sound drivers offer additional tools that would give you the option.

That usually works, but in my experience some applications tend to just stick to one sound source, and will not switch to the other without closing and reopening.

Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Sound, then just enable and disable your different outputs

i do the same thing just search "audio" then you click where you want the sound to output and click set default and your good. the only thing is it sucks that you can't pin that to the taskbar

Make a shortcut or .bat that runs "control mmsys.cpl sounds" ;)

This would solve the hardware problem of where / how to connect both to the motherboard and a physical switch to change the downstream output....now I just need to source the parts...sounds like a fun project. :)

I'd highly suggest eBay or Amazon for finding parts (or another electronics parts dealer), I got some of the stuff for mine from Radioshack, and man was that shit overpriced...

That would be nice but it's a bit more difficult than that as I live in Japan. I have a place in my city where I can go hunting for the parts though ;)
