Thunderbolt GTX 670 + MacBook Pro 13"

nilen

Here I have made a 'ghetto' gaming setup using my Macbook pro 13"

Components:

i5-3210M

4GB DDR3 1600mHz

500GB (5400RPM) + 240GB Vertex 3 (6Gb/s)

GTX 670

ViDock 4+

Sonnet Echo Express adapter

Thunderbolt Cable

Current monitor : LG 55LM760T-ZB

Here I have a eGPU solution to the Macbook Pro 13". The ViDock is an 8x PCIe expansion running to a ExpressCard witch goes into the Sonnet Echo Express adapter which allows me to plug it into my Macbook Pro 13".

You are also able to use pretty much anything that will go into a PCIe 8x slot in the ViDock.

Games run perfectly fine on this setup, I am able to get 40-60 FPS on Far Cry 3 (1920x1080, Dx9, Very High)

If you have any questions please feel free to ask :)

Really interesting. Thanks for sharing. I've heard Linus talk about possible external Thunderbolt GPU set ups in some of his videos. It's nice to see it in action.

Did you encounter any problem setting up the vidock? Is there really a procedure to follow when plugging it in? I was thinking of getting one for my 15" MacBook Pro but reading on other forums it doesn't look like a great alternative. And one more question does the expresscard bottlenecks the gpu?

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 years later: It's finally coming!!!

That's awesome! never even knew about vidocks, thanks for sharing! I'm also wondering if there was any risks in setting up a vidock and how much it impacts the actual performance of the card, even though you still got 40-60 FPS. Really nice though!

There is no risks, The card is pretty much at full performance runs just as it would it in a desktop.

next gen GPUs might need more bandwidth though, so we'll need the next version of thunderbolt for those.
