Higher refresh rate or higher resolution

I am thinking about possibly buying a new monitor and (upgrading from a 1080p 60Hz monitor) I am trying to decide between a higher refresh rate (possibly gsync) 1080p and a budget 1440p monitor. Which one should I go for?

Specs: Intel Core i5 4690k, Gigabyte GTX 980 G1 Gaming

Personally, higher refresh rate.

Not sure if you play CS:GO, but it makes a very noticeable difference.

Unless you're into serious competitive level shooters and stuff like that i would go with the higher resolution, playing AAA games on full ultra at 60 fps is a very solid experience in my opinion.

for fps games, refresh rate, for anything else resolution, id personally go for higher res then refresh rate, 60 is good enough for me

I disagree. A 1440p monitor with G-Sync would look just as good as a 144hz monitor without G-Sync, but with a higher resolution.

(I own a 144hz monitor, and have used G-Sync enabled monitors.)

Each to his own I guess.

I'd agree with the general consensus; competitive FPS games - higher refresh rate, the rest - higher resolution.

Why aren't there 1080p ips panels at 144Hz?

IPS at 144Hz is quite new. There are only like 1 or 2 panels in production so far, and no one's done 1080p yet.

Are you paid to play games ?

No - Get some good 1440p IPS 60Hz monitor (maybe even with G-Sync)

Yes - Get some 165Hz-200Hz monitor and earn your money son

Back again! I just saw a craigslist ad for an ASUS VG248QE for $150. It is a 144hz 1080p 24" TN panel. Do any of you think it sounds like a good deal?

I owned that model monitor for a little over a year.  Although not IPS, still a great monitor at that price.  If refresh rate is the way you want to go, I would definitely recommend that monitor.
