Even at 3x 1440p, 12GB of vRAM is not needed. A single Titan X is not enough for that resolution. 

 

If you're going for it, then 2x 980Tis is the better option, though don't expect max settings in everything, it's a huge amount of pixels to push.

I would either go for 2/3 titan x or if you can't afford it then go with an ultra wide 1440p with 2 980ti

Two 980tis/Fury Xs would be better than one Titan X. TweakTown posted something comparing high-end cards at 6840X3480p (4k surround) where a R9 295x2 was locked in an epic duel against a 980ti SLI.
