I think I have a prototype?

I had a relative who worked at RCA as a design technician. Long story short, he died 3 years ago and I am inheriting various things, I found this DVD recorder and I think it's a prototype. I want your guy's opinion on this please.

Seems legit. My friend worked for motorola for a while and always got to play around with old prototype phones (long after the launch date). Once a company has a production line running for a product the prototype is pretty useless because if they want to improve on the design they would start with the product from the production line. The prototype probably retains a lot of the functionality of the real deal, but some features may be different.
