So I built my computer yesterday, and I built it out of the case, and so I then decided to at least start looking in the bios, I installed everything and ran power to it, I then short the power pins and then the fans start up, and a few LED's on the system light up, but it wont output anything to the display that I have connected to my graphics card, here is my build

The motherboard doesn't have a post code readout, I know the tv is fine (what its connected to as a monitor at the moment) because it works with my laptop just fine, the PSU is fine, everything is seated properly, I tried using a single stick of ram, disconnecting the SSD, putting in just a bootable USB drive, etc.

ok try without the GPU, do you have a different PC that you could try parts into?

Have you tried the steps outlined in this pinned thread?

The machine does power up, but my screen remains black (no POST).

  1. Make sure your BIOS version is compatible with the CPU generation you're trying to run in your motherboard, you can consult the manual or the manufacturer's website about this. (This I can't tell because I can't see anything on the screen, I can't tell if the bios is up to date)
  2. Check if EVERY power cable is connected. Auxiliary power connectors included. (these are all connected)
  3. Make sure the cable coming from your monitor is attached securely to the graphics card. Also make sure it is securely attached to the monitor itself. (Yes, its fine, and the monitor works with my laptop)
  4. Make sure your PSU is powerful enough to power your complete system. (the PSU is more than capable)
  5. Make sure your monitor works by testing it on a different computer. (the TV and cable work fine)
  6. If you have both a dedicated GPU and an iGPU, try your monitor on both the outputs on the graphics cards as well as on the motherboard. (I can't test this because there isn't an integrated GPU)
  7. Make sure all connectors and cables are plugged in securely, reseat if necessary. (These are fine)
  8. Make sure your RAM, CPU and GPU are plugged in securely, reseat if necessary. (these are also fine)
  9. If the motherboard you're using has debug LEDs, check the error code and consult the motherboard manual to see what it means. (nope, don't have debug LED's)
  10. If you have a debug speaker connected to the motherboard, note the beep sequence and consult the motherboard manual or this thread to see what it means. (nope)
  11. Try clearing your CMOS. (I HAVEN"T TRIED THIS YET)
  12. Try booting your computer with only a motherboard, CPU and one stick of RAM attached (if you don't have an iGPU, plug in your GPU as well  ;) ). (I have done this)
  13. Make sure your GPU works (if you have a dedicated one), try it in another computer. (I will try if possible)
  14. Make sure your RAM works, try it another computer. (my other computer uses DDR2
  15. Make sure the RAM is compatible with your CPU and your motherboard. ddr3 1866 hyperx ram is supposedly compatible with this mobo.

This might sound kind of silly, but it is a mistake I have made before (sadly enough); but have you plugged power cables into both the cooler and the GPU on your video card? I know that you said all your cables were on point, but I figured I'd toss the idea out there.

there is another power connector other than the two on the end? other than the 6 and 8 pin pcie connectors?

No, if you have power into both of those, then that's not the issue. One of those PCI power slots powers the cooler on the GPU, and the other powers the GPU itself.

I took another look at the parts list, and PC Partpicker is flagging a potential compatibility issue: "Some AMD 970 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Vishera CPUs."

This is because when AMD released their 9 series chipsets in 2011, they did not support the FX Vishera CPUs... because they didn't exist yet, they were launched in October of 2012. Your BIOS may not be the current version. To my knowledge, there is no way to update your BIOS version without being able to boot. If you have an older CPU that's compatible with your motherboard (full list, and BIOS downloads for your mobo here), try booting up with that CPU. Otherwise, your best course of action may be to contact MSI on the issue.
