I have decided to create a FreeNAS for my family, currently I am going to get 2TB NAS reds in raid 1 for backup/movie/photo streaming to our laptops. The NAS won't be running 24/7 but only when user is needed which is at most around 6 hours a day. My question is: could i install FREENAS onto a 16gbs USB stick or is there some other method?

FX6300

2X4GB DDR3 RAM NON ECC (I think i can live on rough side)

970A-D3P

750ti (Is kinda overkill, I am able to remove this after installing NAS and replacing for a cheap GPU)

Cougar 700W Rev 3

Thanks.

I wouldn't since USB sticks generally low quality flash that can only be written to a relative few times. I'd recommend a 64 or even 32 gb ssd if you can manage or a USB drive with SSD-quality flash like a Corsair Voyager

EDIT: It's expensive but something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Flash-Voyager-128GB-CMFVYGTX3-128GB/dp/B00LJWSHW6

My rig: Intel Core i7-8700K OC 4.8 | NZXT Kraken X62 | ASUS Z370-F | 16 GB Trident Z RGB 3000 (2x8) | EVGA 1070 SC | EVGA SuperNova NEX650G1 | NZXT H700 | Samsung 250GB 850-EVO | 2x 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDDs

I'm going to tell you straight up: If you put FreeNAS on a drive that has more space than is required, the rest of the space is going to be taken unless partitioned off.

One other thing: FreeNAS loads everything into RAM. The USB drive is only going to be used during a cold boot - with my NAS running using FreeNAS, I see no activity unless I make a change. The developers of the OS recommend that it be installed onto a flash drive.

I have no experience with FreeNAS, but @Godlygamer23 clearly does, so I'd listen to him ;). Also, if you follow his advice and use a USB drive, I'd use a new one just to be safe. I had a USB drive fail after about 100 writes.

I know you can flash ISO onto USB but when i select to install i need to use another USB drives right? i can't just overwrite the original USB right.

yes, you need two USBs -- one for the installer and one for the OS to be installed onto.

What do you mean by "drivers"? Everything should be installed unless you're using some kind of special hardware.
