I pulled a good 500gb drive from a brand new machine for an upgrade. If I put it in my gaming machine will I need to do anything special or will it just show up as another drive?

It will show up as another drive, you may need to format it though. You can do this through Disk Management.

Can I format it as a backup? I don't know much about formatting drives

Formatting it will just wipe the data and allow you to set the file system Most drives on Windows use NTFS.

You can then use the Windows built in backup utility to set it as the drive to back up to. I would advise backing up to an external drive, though.

My main drive is a terabyte. I don't really need the extra storage so I may as well have some on board backup.
