My budget is around $1000 AUD for a gaming and occasional light video editing.

CPU: Intel Core i5-6400 2.7GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($269.00 @ Centre Com)

Motherboard: MSI B150M BAZOOKA Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($135.00 @ Umart)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2133 Memory  ($79.00 @ CPL Online)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($99.00 @ Centre Com)
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon R9 380 4GB SOC Video Card  ($329.00 @ Umart)
Case: NZXT S340 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($109.00 @ PLE Computers)
Power Supply: Antec High Current Gamer 520W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($104.00 @ CPL Online)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 OEM (64-bit)

Anyone know of hardware to remove, swap, or include in the build?

I am also needing to convince my mum to let me try to build it. I am 15 and it would be my first build, I have looked into a company doing it for me but their cost is $200. Also their prices of hardware are ridiculous.
My mum is scared I will stuff up and break something worth a few hundred dollars. Any ideas how I can talk her into letting me do it?

Thanks

Tell your mum you're saving money by doing it. Parents love to hear that.

Build looks good, I'll see if I can improve it.

EDIT: Your proposed build was about $1120 AUD excluding the OS so I hope you don't mind if I go for a build with a similar price:

Good build.

I built my first pc at about 17-ish.

Main thing you want to do is research everything. Find out why each of these parts are compatible. check out build logs.

Self education is the most important thing when building pcs because different people will tell you different things for your build but if you research yourself, you'll likely find the best components/methods.

Tell your mum that if some nerd of the internet named Comic_Sans_MS can do it...

Tell your mum that it is as hard as a lego kit, it really is that simple.

Very Good build, the only thing I'd ad would be an SSD.

You might want to add a SSD or get a i5 6500 (I heard it has better value but it depends on how much it costs in Australia).

Is there any benefit of the i5 6500 over 6400?

It's faster, how pricer is it?

Don't think the minor speed increase is of much use with an r9 380. Will be far from bottlenecked regardless.

6400 will easily support a 980ti/fury

Maybe, but if it's just a couple of dollars pricers it's a fine upgrade, you get a boost from 2.7 to 3.2 which can help in few games and productivity (not sure if that is the base or turbo though).

The i5-6500 is about $30 more expensive, is it worth it? I do plan on trying out some video editing

Maybe, wait and see what other members say I feel like it's worthwhile.

If you plan on doing video editing then yes focus more on the cpu a bit more.

An i7 is ideal but ofcourse it'll cost a tonne.

Try compare how much the i5 6500 is to i7 4770 or i7 4790 (non k) see if it's a huge difference because the hyperthreading here will help significantly.

Just keep in mind i7s will provide little to no benefit in (most) games

It is about another $200 for the i7 4770. I could upgrade if I built the computer myself.

If it easy to upgrade the CPU at a later date though, like ram?

Should get good ram straight away because it's cheap.

It depends on whether you go for the Skylake platform or Devil's canyon to be honest.

Ram wont need to be upgraded if you get about 8gb at least.

CPU is easy as long as it's the same socket type.

So if you get an i5 6400 (socket type 1151) , you'll be able to upgrade to another cpu that is the same number. (1151 indicates number of pints on the cpu)

Also, check what the 6600k costs compared to the 6500 in AUS because the 6600k future proofs it for a lot longer since it can be overclocked at a later stage if more performance is required.
