Currently have ATT Uverse with an HGV 3801 router. It's a b/g signal type. Barely get 1MB/s speeds for download over WiFi. And ethernet gives between 2.7 and 3MB/s.

This seems really slow. Especially for ethernet.

Is our connection speed just really slow. And it not really a router issue since even hardwired it's incredibly bad? If so what would you guys recommend?

What is your subscribed speed? Keep in mind the casing for Bits (b) and Bytes (B). 1 byte = 8 bits; 1B = 8b.

Do a speedtest.net test for comparison when you're downloading files (http://www.thinkbroadband.com/download.html or other servers). ISPs may traffic shape their connections to prioritize connections to/from speed testing sites like speedtest.net as to make it appear you're getting your subscribed speeds.

Last I checked. A few days ago. It was like 19-24Mb/s on a speed test. Which is only about 2-3MB/s

So you're getting the Internet speed you're subscribed to and only problem is with wireless devices? Just get an 802.11n AP (802.11ac if you got extra cash) and use that instead.
