We need a NAS!

Go to solution Solved by Streetguru,

Hey Guys!

Starts at 300 for a proper NAS with ECC memory

http://i.imgur.com/kO45Yl9.jpg

If not then get an AM1 PC potentially, with the 5350 and preferably a board with 4 Sata Ports, or there's an ASUS AM1 board that may accept and use ECC memory, it'll be a low power and low cost compared to the above

as far as drives go either the WD Red 2TB drives or 4TB HGST drives are probably what you'll want.

Hey Guys!

I moved in with 2 of my friends and its awesome!

I am working as a graphic designer and one of my friends is a programmer. The other guy just wants our media like music and movies.

Sooooo.. I thought we could build ourselves a NAS that we could use for both backup and some kind of a cloud.

So what would be your ideas for parts and or strategy?

Im really lokking forward to seeing some answers!

Oh nice! And youre happy with it?

I myself have 3 2tb drives in my computer and my friends comboned also about 7tb of storage. So combined we need about 14-15 backup storage and maybe 2tb of 'cloud' storage.. So would that work?

Most parts are kind of personal preference, like drives for example, however i would go with something less power hungry CPU wise if all you're using it for is storage.

Im not super familiar with the Xeon series myself, but you could go for a low power version of those.

I've been using my home server with 2x 3TB WD Red drives and its been great so far, running on some hardware from my old desktop.

3 people splitting cost? How much are you willing to spend? That will narrow options. I use 8 tb for media and 4 for back up. We are one family. You are 3 single tech guys. You may need more.

Yeah were all ready to spend about 200 bucks each so $600 for everything. If we have to well just save on drives but that our idea

Hmm so do you know if a nas wants more cores or higher frequency?

Not sure but i know file transfers arent super CPU intensive, a file transfer over 1gbit on my server uses about 10% of my AMD Phenom II x4 which obviously isnt the fastest CPU.

Probably more ram and drive intensive.. :)

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong model but I'm seeing

"Default/ Max. Memory: 256MB"

For the around $200 one

Comparatively here'd be the AM1 build, it just needs a flash drive for FreeNAS and the Drives, maybe a gold or platinum rated PSU if the budget is higher

Although, Real NAS' have ECC

also a battery back up is going to be useful

FreeNAS only needs a USB, kind of meant to run that way, it just sits on the RAM, unless you wanted to run virtual machines from within it, I don't think you'd need an OS drive
