Noisy Noctua NH-U9B-SE2

gleggie

So I built a mini ITX system with the Noctua NH-U9B-SE2.

http://www.amazon.com/Noctua-Silent-Cooling-NH-U9B-SE2/dp/B0065SFEE8/ref=cm_cd_al_qh_dp_t

Somehow the fans on the cooler are very loud, which makes me wonder if they are defective or if I did something wrong. Asus AI Suite says they are running between 1400 and 1700 RPM, which does seem excessive.

Am I missing something or did I just get defective fans?

Edit:

CPU is core i5 6600k if that matters.  Full component list here http://pcpartpicker.com/user/gleggie/saved/kDfWGX

You can adjust the fan profile in AI suite. No rule that you must use the stock fan curve.

I have a D9L in my M-itx rig, running at 1000rpm.

That rpm is very high. Noctua's tend to be quiet below 600rpm and near inaudible under 300rpm.

The NF-B9 fans on the NH-U9B SE2 don't support PWM, so perhaps your motherboard can not control them and they are running at full speed. You try switching the motherboard to voltage control if possible or use the supplied Low-Noise-Adaptors to slow the fans down.

92mm fans aren't the quietest to begin with. I had U9B (original) in my previous config and it was very audible even when idle.
