so i got an ssd a samsung evo 850 250gig and i fresh installed a version of windows 7 ult and it went all well but

for some reason the ssd would just stop working as my desktop will just freeze and not let me do anything and when i try to restart it would refuse to boot and ask me to select a proper boot device

my motherboard is an older model and only supports sata 2 but i know sata 3 has backwards compatibility and it is set on IDE mode so i think this may be causing the problem

but all i know is the ssd is not faulty and is fully working and healthy so i am not sure what to do my plan is to change to AHCI and fresh install windows but at the moment that is where i am am any help or recommendations would be useful

if your Windows is set to achi mode then you won't be able to boot when the bios is in ide mode

same goes for if Windows is in ide mode and bios is in achi mode

it is prefered to use achi mode for ssd

Why if I may ask good sir?

Because SSD´s are not designed for defragmentation and there is a very high risk you kill it. Lifespan will reduced alot, even if you dont kill it. Thats why Win7+ disable autodefrag automaticly when you install a SSD.
