Linux that just works

Okay so on my chromebook which is going to be my "Main" laptop, the one I wont have going down I want to run another version of Linux on it, its all prepped for it just need some more distro advice.

So we have Debian which of course is rock solid but what is Debian 8s base kernel (I need at least 3.17) and what is its battery life like on laptops?

I do personally prefer something like Arch but I cannot be bothered to spend a few hours building and tweaking.

 

Ideas?

The simplest version of Linus overall is Ubuntu that comes with a big community to help you with any issues that may arise, that being said the other versions are ussually less simple so that they can be more effective, overall ubuntu is a good starting os for linux just make sure to look up the indivitual parts and make sure that they work out of the box, some ethernet/wifi drivers need to be installed if it is not supported out of the box. this is simple if you have a second pc. but does take time and a little know how.

The chromebook has an issue with Ubuntu and Wifi, it works but just doesn't connect at all.

Which I cant really have on a system like this, which is why I was thinking debian

Linux Mint.  Built on Ubuntu, so it shares pretty much all the software compatibility (and Ubuntu is in turn based on Debian, so even more software compatibility trickles down from there), and has access to Ubuntu's massive software repositories as well as support for PPAs.  Battery life is, in my experience using Mint on a laptop, no worse than anything else.  It helps that Mint is towards the mid/mid-low end in terms of resource use, so it tends to be pretty good at battery life.  Plus, it comes with a lot of driver support and a lot of built-in multimedia compatibility, so of all the distributions you could pick, Mint is probably the closes to "just works".  Not to mention it's not hard to install and configure.

I have two laptops that originally came with Win7 on them. After some time I installed Ubuntu Linux and it all worked just fine, in both laptops. I did have to help the connection to wifi the first time. If you installed 'default' the upper right panel will show either an 'up arrow with a down arrow'. If you see that, the connection is ok.

 

if you don't see that, I would see a changing pattern in that same spot. It looks kind of like a sound wave. starts small at the bottom and gets larger towards the top. and it fluctuates (probably a gif). This means it is trying to make a connection.

 

If the laptop has a hardware thing to turn off the wireless connection, make sure it is on.

 

Next, check the connections the network tool has found. Look at 'edit connections'. You might have to provide a password.

 

If there are more than one network, then you will have to tell it which one you are interested in.

 

Later, I replaced the 2.5 inch hard drives in both laptops with ssd. Yippee... very fast starts.

That´s how it went down for me, linux and a wireless USB-dongle

Linux biggest advantage is it´s biggest holddown... free and open source is nice, but it´s a nightmare when you need third party drivers for something specific...

All this is already done, it works out of the box, it should do anyways its an Intel NIC inside it, but it connects then disconnects, Maybe a kernel/driver issue possibly fixed with a kernel update, now I finally have my USB - RJ45 connector it can be tested
