hi, i had an idea for a modular phone. removable & up-gradable cpu, ram, storage, battery, display (lcd & amoled), frame, buttons, speakers, camera, basically a universal phone. i think that this is a good idea but i just have no idea how to make it happen or if its even possible, as i have seen kickstarter campaigns for phones.

It's not a unique idea. You'd be up against the likes of Google. http://www.projectara.com/

Also, just having an idea of something that would be cool isn't good enough. You'd need to resources and knowledge to make it happen.

well i think that it isnt really as much about how rich and popular a company is and more about the quality of the product. if i made it and made it good enough, then there would be those who would buy it. companies like pebble, a company that nobody knew, is now one of the biggest smartwatch companies. The problem of resources and knowledge is true, but that is why i am here, to get feedback, ideas, and information, such as to know what i would need to learn to be able to do this.

i think that this is fairly unique, or at least the one i am thinking of is, as i have never seen something like it as if i did i would buy it instantly. and keep in mind that i just recently thought of this and just came here to see if it was conceivable.

True, the size of a company does not guarantee the quality and adoption of a product, but the huge amount of funding and resources available to Google is not easy to go up against.

When Pebble released their SmartWatch, no one else was really doing much work in the area. Some companies had tried, but pretty much all of them were failures. Modular phones is something that is currently being worked on by a lot of big companies. The phone industry is also not a new, relatively unknown industry like SmartWatches was. There are a lot of big players involved, and it's not really a new market, but an evolution of current phones.

You'd need to think of things that can make the phone unique.

There are many, many issues with this idea. First off, the idea at its core is poor. You'll have a very low adoption rate, as most consumers barely understand fully assembled phones, let alone ones where you'd have to choose the components yourself. A huge majority of people simply won't bother to learn what is what.

Then there's the issues with modules. You'd have to buy in a massive bulk amount to make them cheap enough that people would buy them, and the companies would require a huge amount of money up front to do the R&D required to bring them to a reality.
