So i'm looking at a big upgrade as my laptop is 4 years old and tower is 8.

I could use help with picking out a case and would like to get involved in some water cooling so I need help with what to get on that front.

Budget is about 2.5k so if you see anything else I should add/change please also mention that. I have monitors, keyboards, mice.

Machine will be mostly used for software development, with some gaming. My plan is to set up KVM with the GPU passed to a vm used for gaming (I have an older gfx card for everything else). I will be setting up 2-3 other vms for databases and hosting for testing of software.

I know the parts might be a bit overkill for what I will use it for but I want it to be somewhat futureproof.

CPU: Intel Core i7-5930K 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor  ($554.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Asus X99-DELUXE/U3.1 ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard  ($388.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Storage: Intel 730 Series 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($149.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 390X 8GB Video Card  ($379.99 @ Micro Center)
Total: $1753.94
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

The motherboard being over $100 cheaper and still has things like a 3.1 port.

As for storage, the Samsung 950 pro is almost the same as the Intel one you choose, and better than it. I do advise getting a hdd. I don't know if maybe you're reusing the hdd from your previous pc so I left the hdd blank.

With that big of a budget a R9 390X is kind of a waste.

Case is subjective to interest, but it's a pretty good one.

Will the GTX 980 have any issues with GPU passthrough? I'm not planning on using unraid and I have read that NVidia cards have issues when you run them through a VM/Hypervisor.

Ok well thanks anyways you managed to save me $100 on the mobo as I don't need wireless or the extra eth port which seems to be the only major diffs other than a couple sata and usb ports.

Any suggestions on some water cooling stuff if you have any?

Something like this I think would be more worth it.

Nvidia seems to actively try and prevent people from doing GPU passthroughs, attempting to do so produces an Error Code 43, though there is a relatively easy fix

here's a video for GPU passthrough stuff, he uses a 390X

Anyways there's my suggestion, I don't know your monitor set up, but this includes 2 4K IPS displays, though 40" 4k displays would be better for productivity, course you could always get a less insane set up, but hey more pixels the better

the 390X included is the best available, comes water cooled and can OC well on average

the 5930K just gives you more PCI-e lanes, probably not really worth it

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Thanks. I'll give a look at the 5820k instead of the 5930k as I will most likely never need the extra lanes as it won't be a major gaming machine I just don't want to miss out if I want to play something.
