Network Issue: Half-second Disconnect

Go to solution Solved by MeshFile,

You're not reading. There is no modem. There is the fibre line into the property that connects to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) which converts the optical signal into copper, plugged into the ONT is my R7000 router.

Either way. It's no longer within your responsibility to troubleshoot it. Your ISP should handle that.

FYI all signal needs modulation and demodulation from the last mile so there's always a modem. Not visible to you, but it's there in your properly.

Hi,

I've been having some serious issues with my internet. I get random disconnects for a fraction of a second (just long enough to kill my game/stream/online services etc) every now and again without explanation. No idea what is causing it.

I'm using a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 which is connected via WAN to my ONT. (To clarify, I'm on a fibre optic 100/50 connection). I have tried with the ISP provided modem as well, it does exactly the same thing.

Router logs show nothing out of the ordinary at the time the disconnect happened so I checked Event Viewer but there were zero logs during that time as well. I'm perplexed.

Anyone heard of this issue, or even better, know a fix?

Does you Wifi connection drop on the PC or just kill the internet connection for a second ? Also what Wifi Connection is in your PC ?

Computer is connected via ethernet, has no wifi capabilities. The network drops for everyone in the house. Not sure where the issue is and it's really hard to diagnose because it's very random.

Other devices connected in the house:

LG TV (wifi)

PS4 (wifi)

2x Sony Xperia Z5 (wifi)

1x laptop (ethernet)

1x PC (ethernet)

Laptop and PS4 are connected over the 2.4GHz connection and the phones are connected on the 5GHz.

Uncertain if the issue is ISP side or one of the devices, due to it being so random, we can't exactly have things turned off while waiting.

Test if computer wired direct to modem has same issue. Likely ISP/modem issue since all devices experience the disconnect.

Already tested, still does it. Not using the ISP provided modem as mentioned, removed it from the network and hooked the Nighthawk directly into the ONT with VLAN tagging enabled, as mentioned in the OP.

Then it's likely with the wiring from your ISP or the modem itself. I've got that issue before and they had to replace the modem as the cause of it was a failing firmware.
