So as the title goes, my hard drive is causing "disk read error". My os is on an ssd so I've been using my pc without my hard drive for a little while. But not having the mass storage is kinda bothersome. When the hard drive is plugged into my motherboard, I can do the usual stuff for some time, then the computer will crash into the "disk read error. press cntrl+alt+del to restart". I don't wanna spend around 60 dollars for a hard drive so can someone please provide a solution?

Many thanks.

Does the drive disappear from the OS?

Whoops accidentally put as solved but what do you mean does it disappear?

Does it still appear in File Explorer?

Well it's still functional except from causing the "disk read error"

Scan the drive for errors using Windows' built in function. Go into File Explorer, find the drive and click Properties. Navigate to the Tools tab and select Check.

I've tried it, and it said there was no issue :/

Who is the manufacturer of the drive?

Can you download CrystalDiskInfo and post a screenshot of what it shows?

Did some extra digging found some possible issues to look at;

Disk read error:

1) may need to defrag drive or partition may be bad (if a partition is present)

2) memory error (I know but in some rare cases its is the memory causing the error)

3) bad cable or not seated properly.

4) Bios mis-identifying the drive (bios reset or upgrade needed)

5) Bad Boot record or

6) Boot sector

chkdsk would have found this.

What kinds of tasks does the error occur on?

It usually occurs when I'm doing stuff in file explorer, maybe granting permission to install something, maybe going to the favourites tab.

That makes me think your getting bad/failing sectors.

Sometimes there is a lemon in a batch of HDDs, it happens.

So it could be a faulty hard drive?

If it was bad or failing sectors, would reset/formatting the drive help?

Nope. Try running Seagate's diagnostic tool for their hard drives. I think it's called SeaTool.
