How much power do you think I would need for a FX 6300 and an R7 360? I know AMD is known for their hungry ass components, but I've never built with AMD before so I don't know what PSU I should buy.  I also want to keep this under 40 bucks because this is a budget build.

You could easily get by with a 430 / 450W unit. At least 80+ Bronze ofc, preferably Gold. You won't have much room for upgrading though.

An FX 6300 uses around 95W
A R7 360 uses around 100W
50W for HDDs, case fans and anything else you might have
100W for overhead
350W is more than enough to power that system.

I know AMD is known for their hungry ass components.

Saying something so general is never correct. It's ALWAYS on a model-by-model basis. For instance, do you know that for a very long time AMD (former ATI) GPUs used to be the most efficient ones around? 2012 was when the scales got balanced and only when Maxwell released did Nvidia actually take the efficiency crown. As for CPUs, it's a similar story. Most CPUs are not going to go above 95W and the few ones that do either have absurd performance or are flat out bad designs. - 5820K is 125W but powerful. 9590 is just dumb.

As for GPUs, fun fact, the "power-hungry" 390 uses 60W more than the "power-efficient" 970. Why you may ask? Because TDP is rated in 2 different ways by 2 different manufacturers.

AMD rates their GPUs with an added +20% to account for OCing so while the 390 is listed as 285W, it realistically only pulls around 230W at stock and 285W when OCed to it's limits.

Source: http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/amd-radeon-hd-7850-and-7870-review,6.html

Nvidia, on the other hand, rate TDP based on stock clocks, without accounting for boost clocks OR GPU Boost 2.0 which AutoOCs cards. Meaning, that the 970 which is rated at 145W only draws 145W when it's clocked at 1050Mhz or something of the sorts. Once Nvidia's "features" come into play, though, you get a power draw of around 170W to 200W depending on the card and your personal settings.

The ~50W difference doesn't really account for any savings in PSU budget or power bill as your average AC unit pulls around 1000-2000W constantly whereas the GPU difference is present for only 4-5 hours daily when you game at 100% utilization.

500w to be safe

500w is overkill. A decent 350w would already be plenty.

ok thanks for the input! I have a 430W currently on the build list so I will stick with that.  I won't be upgrading this computer anytime soon after purchase so it should be fine.

(also pls dont post just to argue about Team Green/Team Red.  it's not helpful @don_svetlio)

I was merely explaining something as you didn't seem to know it.

If it's a CX430 do not buy it.

A cx430 is perfectly fine for that system.

I wouldn't mainly due to heat.

You mean dropping out of 80+ by 0.1%? http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story3&reid=239

The cx430 shouldn't have any issues cooling itself properly especially considering the system pulls ~200w at load.

I still don't trust it. It's electrical performance is mediocre.
