I happened to stumble upon liquidation.com where you bid on lots of refurbished, returned, or salvaged stuff. There are a few containing titan blacks,980's, Titan x's etc; all of which are likely not funtional. For 75 bucks though, anyone ever repaired a graphics card? Is the toaster oven trick worth it?

I wouldn't try. It's pointless. Best case scenario, you're getting some functional parts if you can use them. Realistic scenario - you waste $75 on a bunch of junk you'll never be able to use.

Trust me, they perfectly know what they're selling. If they were salvageable, they'd be refurbished and sold as such.

it seems like a legit site, itso just a matter of repairability. ... but I mean you could end up with a 980ti with a bunch of other stuff (mobo keyboard etc all salvage) for under 120 USD assuming you get it working

If you are in Calgary, AB, Canada. Look at Memory Express for reber'ed stuff, got a MSI H81-P33 for $39 Canadian! Worked too.

that thought had crossed my mind, but in some cases it's easier to sell it all than to hassle with refurbing. High risk high reward right? ;)

It's marked as salvage so it does not work. Basically, you'll be paying for paperweights. And they are not repairable most of the time.

I see a great deal of your posts in classifieds so I'll assume you know what you're talking about. So not worth a shot sticking it in a toaster? xD I've seen monitors on ebay and whatnot I've considered trying to fix

and I'd avoid any of the auctions marked as "salvage".  the "returns" might have better success rates, but their descriptions of "returns" is kinda disheartening too

that thought had crossed my mind, but in some cases it's easier to sell it all than to hassle with refurbing. High risk high reward right? ;)

I used to do that when I was building systems on really low budget. You can sometimes get nice deals, but you have to be smart about them. It's not about risk and reward, when you risk it's a gamble, and gambling almost always ends up in you losing and the casino winning bigtime. If you're looking for a cheap GPU, try GPUShack. They at least know what they're selling and they provide warranty for their stock. Sure, it's not Titan - but trust me, no one right in their mind would sell a salvageable Titan for $75. Also, it's not like there's a lot you can do to repair a GPU, especially if it suffered physical damage.

This here is a clear waste of money. And so is most of classifieds where someone claims they "don't have a PC to check part X" or "they don't have a charger so they can't see whether the laptop/camera/whatever works". You can safely assume it's dead without even looking or thinking twice.

Sometimes you can really score nice deals, especially when you find someone who doesn't have a clue about what they have, or someone who's ignorant. This applies mostly to complete PCs. As far as parts are concerned, you'll either have people who know what they're selling and they charge for their parts accordingly, people who are trying to sell lemons and people who know they're selling damaged stuff for someone who may make use of it. There's also another category - but it's kinda rare. Namely, people like me, who have stuff and are willing to sell it at a really low price or even give it away, because I'd much rather have money/space right away than wait for weeks for sale.

that's true, next week I'm planning a big hike. Supposed to be lots of snow yet sunny once these storms clear up. Too bad it's so damned expensive to live here

yeahhhh, that keeps me living in Nebraska, here my house payment is 630$ a month... to own, not rent, taxes included, and its not a pile of crap.  If i'm not mistaken, its difficult to find a hole in the wall to sleep in for that much in soCal.
