Lightweight 11-14" Laptop Suggestions

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

@Emperor_Piehead @CoolBeans @whatthe_fuzz @TheSLSAMG

Thanks everyone for your contributions to the poll. Sorry for not picking any of you for Best Answer.

Feel free to add on to the topic with any extra information or updates but I'll mark this as solved.

Looking for a cheap laptop for my mom for office related stuff like excel and word. Mass editing of document scans with Office Picture Manager.

Being lightweight is the most important factor. Preferably around 3lbs.

The cheaper the better, hopefully everything will be less than $500 USD.

Preferably from Newegg or Amazon but not required.

Probably going to replace the hdd in it with a ssd or sshd and wiping everything with fresh reinstalls of Windows and Office.

Looking at laptops now and I'm likely to post some links as I find them.

Edits: Looking at these two right now

ASUS X200CA-DB01:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314135

Acer Aspire C710-10074G01ii:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231117

Not sure if the 1.5ghz celerons are powerful enough though. I have an extra 2GB stick of ram lying around for if I get the Asus notebook.

Edits: Turns out 1.5ghz is enough. If anyone can find a cheaper solution, that would be nice. Otherwise, a vote would help sway my decision.

Alienware m14x

Just kidding. I have to agree with Piehead, there are not that many that fit your requirements unfortunately. Although the notebook that CoolBeans posted a link for looks fairly decennt.

Found this one http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VivoBook-X202E-DH31T-SL-11-6-Inch-Touchscreen/dp/B00AEEC2BM it doesn't leave much room for a new ssd or sshd though

Nothing really good at that price if you want an ultrabook which are light this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230785 is as low as I would go

Lol much too expensive.

I'm going to install Windows on the laptop. I'm not sure if the cpu is good enough to run it smoothly. I'm also not sure if there's a slot for a msata ssd in it or not. Watching a video it being taken apart right now and I don't see one.

No need for such a powerful laptop.

Nope. In a way, I guess I knew what I was getting into, but the OS is restrictive and there is very little power for multitasking.

I have both the Acer C7 and the Samsung Chromebook, (me and my dad needed small laptops for mobile use) if you had to choose one or the other, you should take the Acer. With the Samsung, I can't play a YouTube video while browsing the LTT forums. I will be buying this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312830&Tpk=G505s soon.

I have done that as well. The trackpad is buggy and stuff constantly crashes, at least for me.

dang that kinda kills any chromebook hacks i would do... :P

ya that is a great price! you might also want to consider some refurbed asus ROG laptops. they sometimes drop around that price point

I don't think a ROG laptop would be lightweight. It's interesting it would be sop cheap though.

I don't think my mom would need that kind of power. Lightweight with a ssd should be enough for what she's doing.
