Resolution problem/doubt

Hi guys. i got an old 32inch philips tv. and it has 2 hdmi slots and 1 vga slot.

i tried to connect the tv into my motherboard using vga and it works. it can go upto 1600x900 but i was using only 1366x768 cause im not very comfortable with that big resolution.

any way a while ago a bought an hdmi connector and then use it into my gtx 960
and as i know. hdmi is the best connection for display. the problem is i can go through 1080p but it does not fit my screen. i don't knw why. and the recommended resolution (which is fit on screen) is  1200+x768.. anything that goes above that resolution is not fitting the screen.
how come my vga has a better resolution than hdmi?

VGA doesn't 'discuss' with the display (or in your case the TV). It just throws the resolution at it and lets the display deal with it. The display then stretches the image to fit the screen. If there's trouble, the display will just put up an 'out of range' error. HDMI, however, asks the display what resolutions, color spaces, refresh rates and so on it supports and only allows you to set within the margins the display reports back. There are other constricting things too. Like for example, if the graphics card is from the time before wide-screen displays, it could only show 4:3 resolutions.

I'm thinking, your TV isn't Full-HD (1080p) but HD-ready (720p). If the VGA offers it 1080p, it just takes it and down-scales it to fit the screen but as you're connecting with HDMI, the TV has the option to deny full-HD and that's exactly what it does. Simply put, what you're seeing over VGA isn't actually 1080p.

The thing about HDMI being better is about the fact that it's digital. It's not susceptible to interference nearly as much as VGA. But if you're satisfied with the quality of your VGA image, stick with it for the time being.
