Just wondering if I really do need to get an anti-static mat before I build my PC. I already have a wrist strap and a wood table that I will be building on. I live in a pretty low static area where I don't really ever get shocked when touching metal, even when using a blanket.

Just don't wear socks or construct your PC on your bed and you're fine. Speaking from experience I have shocked the life out of a hard drive by disassembling my laptop on my fluffy comforter on my bed.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Nope. It's not required, but if you wish to have peace of mind, go ahead and give it a purchase, but it likely won't be required. Even the wrist strap is arguably not required, but just attach the alligator clip to the case and you should be good to go. You may also attach the clip to the grill of your power supply fan with the unit connected to the wall.

Also, if you have dry skin, your wrist strap won't function that well or at all. Make sure your skin is moistened with lotion that doesn't have insulators in it.

wear shoes with rubber soles. Done.

That doesn't ground you. That only prevents your shoes from generating a static charge. You can generate a static charge with movement from your t-shirt or hair.

That's what the wrist band is for, which the OP already has.

I know, but then there's no reason to wear rubber soles then.

There is if you're on a carpet or barefoot.

Before contacting any PC hardware, wrist strap should go back on with a grounding connection made. If the person is wearing their strap properly while on carpet, any static electricity goes right to the ground connection. But then it goes back to what I said earlier - static electricity can still be generated through clothing or hair movement. The rubber soles will not save them. The wrist strap will.

Anyone have any recommended "cool-looking" or just generally decent mats for building? Just curious.

Any particular style you're after?

Literally just shooting in the dark for general recommendations. Something to put on a table. But is not just a plain color or something.

Found a few here:

I have a Mod-Mat Extreme and the wiring diagrams and pin-outs really come in handy plus it includes a wrist strap.

I keep a pair of Ansell Hyflex 11-100 in my backpack at all times, they are amazing if you need to replace 500+ sticks of RAM and even better when you don't have to RMA over $1000 worth of RAM.
