It's an image of the old Windows install if the drive wan't wiped before install/upgrade. 

 

It's not needed for your current Windows install, it's just there as a sort of archive.

Yes. You might not be able to just delete it normally, though. 

 

You might need to use something like Disk Cleanup http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/how-do-i-remove-the-windows-old-folder

Just read the title.

 

Windows.old is the folder that keeps all files from your previous version of Windows. Eg: I upgraded to Windows 10 and deleted the folder (which contained Windows 8.1 Pro and eveything else I had on that OS). You should only delete this if you're certain that you won't be reverting back to the previous version of Windows you installed.

Yes, but I recmmend using windows disk cleaner to clean those files

You may delete Windows.old, but you should use Disk Cleanup to do it.
