Hello! I'm going to build a PC using the things listed below. I am using scan.co.uk and pcpartpicker because I found a few cool deals here that isn't availble on pcpartpicker, however other items will be in the pcpartpicker link. I also put gaming in quotations as there isn't a graphics card in the system and will be using the Intel graphics for the time being, so I can play a few casual games, but not triple A titles, therefore it is more of a work/media PC with some casual gaming although the rest of the specs are gaming worthy. Can you suggest any advice on what to change/add, etc.. Thanks!

Here are the links and the specifications:

All above for £365.99, link here: http://www.scan.co.uk/todayonly   (on the No-Brainer deal, if you are on mobile then switch to desktop view)

Ram (8gb ddr4 corsair), cooler (coolermaster hyper 212 evo) and the ssd (kingsington 120gb v300 ssd) is found here: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/Zt4kxr

For convenience, the pcpartpicker.co.uk link for every item listed here is here: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/wDMx7P

Thank you!

----edit----

I have changed a few things from the replies, and here is the updated pcpartpicker link: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/C6dWHx

My Build:

i5 4690k

Gigabyte Z97 D3

AMD R9 290

8gb ram

Sandisk SSD plus 120gb

EVGA G2 550W

1. I would change the PSU to an EVGA or Seasonic one, Thermaltake isn't really trusted by people here

2. 2x4GB ram is better than a single 8GB stick, unless you plan to upgrade to 16GB later

2. it's a gaming build, but where is your GPU?

4. Pls no V300 ssd

But hasn`t the 'dual channel RAM is better than single' changed with skylake? Or am I wrong on that one?

to game or not to game, that`s the question

The only things you should change are the PSU and the awful V300 SSD. Get a XFX, Seasonic or EVGA G2/B2/GS/GQ unit and get a 850 Evo for the SSD.

Why is the v300 bad? It has a lot of positive reviews on amazon...but i will try to get a better one. i will also look into getting dual channels ram (2x4gb ddr4) Thanks for your help!

  • change the SSD. IOt isnt 'awful' but definently not a top pick

change the PSU. I recommend a seasonic, EVGA or corsair one. A 300w OEM from seasonic would be good.

get a cheap GPU. It doesn't have to be super good or even new. Look around on ebay or something for a R9 260-280x or a gtx 660-760ti. I recommend the 750ti. You can find them for $50 or cheaper used or open box. Intel graphics wont preform to a good standard in even casual games. If you do this then id go for the Corsair CX500/CX450

otherwise it all looks great

I dont have the best experience with Thermaltake cases. The have been mediocre at best in my experience. The NZXT P240 is a bit more expensive but miles better.

The thermal take case and psu is part of the scan deal listed in the post so I might not be able to change that, however I will be aware of this and see if I can get a better case and psu.

I will also look into in grabbing a used Gpu, thanks!

The V300 are probably some of the slowest SSDs you can find and Kingston pulled a bait and switch with the controller and NAND to make them that way, thats why no one here will recommend them.

P.S. Don't get a CX series PSU, they're worst than the TT you're getting.

I have change my build accordingly into this, can you please review it? Thanks. http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/C6dWHx

I have changed the cpu to the non k version (6600) because it is unlikely I will be overclocking it.

I have changed the psu to a evga one

I have changed the case to a NZXT one

I have put the ram in dual channel (2x4gb)

And I have changed the ssd to a Samsung 850 evo

Thanks for your advice!

That PSU is on the bad side of evga's offerings, I recommend you get one of these but other than that the build looks fine:

Can I recommend you use amd for the most of it. I got an Athlon x4 860K, 12GB of RAM and an R7 360 for just £10 cheaper. I can also play some intense games too like Star wars battlefront at kinda high settings.

I would say they are on-par with the TT. They are pretty good PSUs. Not the best but on special you can get one for under $40

maybe go for a RM series supply. They are 100% however they are a tad expensive. Seasonic's OEM offerings arnt pretty but good quality  and cheap.

They are both made by the same OEM but the TT has better caps with better temp ratings which makes it better. Corsair PSUs are overpriced, only the fanboys go for them nowadays.

I disagree. If I have the budget I will always go for the Corsair supplies. Im not a fanboy but I think they are packaged the best, are the best built and the the quietest PSUs. Their customer service has also been second to none in my experience.

Corsair has overall good CS and I guess their packaging is decent(not like that matters though) but their build quality is no better than any other brand that uses the same OEM unit and they have some of the loudest units you can find + they, more often then not, sell overpriced versions of cheaper units. What you posted is fanboy mentality.

no. its not. i just thought that my experience was good so i feel good recommending their RM and CX supplies. I've only used them but they were good. I have used a lot of other bands and they seemed to be the best overall, if at a slightly higher price.

The RM and CX series' aren't even the same tier and the CX series is one of last things anyone on this forum would recommend, Corsair PSUs in general actually, they're plenty of better options.
