ESD worries

So I didn't know that when you connected your ESD wristband to the case it had to have the psu plugged in and off, and this is how I've done maintenance on my pc for the last 3 months it's been booting and working fine so far but every now and then it freezes forcing me to hard reset, should I be really worried?

Probably not ESD related.

dont worry i have never killed computer components from esd

Also does ESD degrade the overall quality of the component if the component receives a small amount of static or does it only kill it in one shot when there is too much static?

It can damage little parts of the component in one shot, if that makes sense.

If there isn't enough ESD to damage anything, just make sure to discharge it safely and you will be fine.

ESD is an electric shock that can kill stuff and causes magic smoke to escape.

Probably not the reason why your pc goes wonky from time to time. 

 

Is your psu grounded? (earth wire stuff, other people that live with you might know that)

No, I don't think so. As long as you don't fry the thing (which is really difficult, btw - my board's been through hell and back and still works a treat) you should be all right.

Ok thanks, I was looking into info regarding ESD as well as precautions and after learning I've been doing it wrong i just got reeeally nervous

To be honest, I think the dangers of ESD are hugely exaggerated. My motherboard has survived bangs against the inside of the case, me dropping the screwdriver on it, having one area covered in silica gel because I was trying to remove a stripped screw and nearly being pulled in half because the screw wouldn't come out. Like I said before, works fine.

You are probably right about the whole exaggeration part, because I remember when i was younger I used to tinker around with older hardware out of curiosity before I knew what ESD was and I would sometimes do it on a carpet with socks on with no present damage ever showing but, who knows, I could have just been lucky.

They are.  It was a problem up to the 90s, though where it wasn't.  Now, it is is because of those times.

As I said, it's just Windows 10 being unstable.  You could always roll back to 8.1 or 7.

Can't roll back, as it was a clean installation and frankly I'm too lazy and don't own a spare drive to hold all the main drive's data to do another clean install to 7, plus I actually like windows 10's UI a lot and I've never seen this problem on any other PC except mine so I'm not too sure its just the OS' problem
