I just got a UPS from my dad (it i like a battery connected to the wall plug then it goes into your pc, if the power goes you stay online!) because he works at a electric company so he can get them for cheap and why not :P

Are there any members here on the forum who uses a UPS?

Yep, been using mine for a while.  I've had builder at my house for about 4 months now and they randomly turn all the power off so a UPS is really handy :)  I've got my monitors, PC and router plugged in to it.

I'd like to get one soon but I don't think my computer is in much danger of a electrical surge or anything. I'll get one one day to be extra safe, gotta protect my baby.

It's not to protect from surges, it's for when your power goes out or gets turned off.  It acts as a power supply, like a big battery.

Yeah that's what I meant, got it mixed up. :P But I'm sure it protects from surges as well.

After I had 2 power surges in a row that killed my motherboard through my surge protector i've had one. My computer hasn't had a problem since. It turned out a few months later that no one had installed a grounding wire into the house we moved into. Also figured out power surges is what killed my first motherboard(on #3 now)

mine is also protected from electrical surges (i think), but my room doesn't have any grounding :S

Every plug is protected from surges in the UK with a fuse in the head and a central fuse box to the house as a fail safe but extra surge protection like extenders with a fuse in them are an extra backup.

Yep!

Using 1 on my main rig - 900W capacity

Using another (9 years old) for TV, router, and general stuff. - 600W capacity

Have a spare 1 that has a dead battery (no longer charges / keeps its charge, also 9 years old) - 600W capacity

They have saved my butt countless times!!!  :)

I don't really care for surge protection all that much, I mainly care about protection against brown-outs and black-outs.

If I only cared about surge protection, then I would have gotten the average surge protector.

I'm not sure as that looks like a European socket and I have UK sockets.  I assume your sockets aren't earthed/grounded so if there is a surge of electricity there is nowhere for it to go apart from the component/appliance that it is connected to, if it were grounded then the excess electricity would go into the ground.

Wow, nice ups you have there.

I have an old APC one that I got from work, just threw some new batteries in it and wired on a new plug ( old one was cut off about an inch from the UPC).

IT works beautifully and adds a second (or third) level of surge protection, since I think I have a whole house protector, and one from the wall to the UPS.

Thanks,

Serge protection is very important.. what's more important is Trim, which is when you have high incoming line voltage and the UPS just knocks down the power to a safer level, serge is only for massive fast spikes...

So use your APC with your computer or sensitive hardware...

What's funny, I moved into my new house about 3 months ago and I just recently used the logs from this APC to prove to power distribution company I have had mutable high line power loads coming into my house, as a result they are changing a transformer this coming week... Feel sorry for all the other people that did not notice this as it would of been an issue for some time, and with high line voltage of over 260V power transformers in TV etc wont last very long...
