Ethernet if you plan on gaming online. You can also look at Powerline.

ethernet all day. you could also try powerline but i dunno if it's reliable

 

 

But if it's not really convinient (and I see it isn't)

 

You have no choice but to go wireless...

you could get wireless repeaters but that's sort of counter intuitive

Eh, I don't think he's THAT far away from the router, but that's also an option if he gets stuck in a tricky situation.

Powerline?

uses powerlines in your house (hence the name) to make a connection to your router, then the internet.  I can recommend a cheap, good kit if you want. apart from occasional ping spikes, it's basically running a more unstable ethernet connection to your computer.
