Hello everyone, I recently upgraded to a gtx 980 ti from a 770 and really loved the performance in some games. But around 50% of them don't use all of my gpu, around 60% usage and no more than 60% or 70% of my cpu usage, can anyone help?

Maybe it isn't using all of your gpu because:

1) it's overkill for 1080p gaming

2) you are gaming in 1080p

 

I think they both mean the same thing.

But it's not using all the power from my cpu. None of my cores are maxed out. It should be maxing out if it was my cpu.

most games dont utilize 8 cores, they prefer faster cores. its your cpu

It's your CPU.

 

 

I know that most games don't use 8 cores, but none of them are using any of my cores above 80%. And for example Farcry 3 stays at like 47 fps

All cores in that CPU are weaker cores.

 

Get an i5 4460 and call it a day.

a fx 8350 and a 980 ti is a horrible mash up cause the fx cores are 40% slower than intel cores. i suggest upgrading if you want more performance upgrade

I'm confused. Even though the cores may be "weaker" wouldn't they use all the power from the cores it was using? Even if it was using only 1 of my cores, wouldn't the usage be close to 100% if it was a bottleneck?

thats the thing behind the architecture of the amd cores

they have a "module" design", where there are 4 modules in the fx 8350 each having a logical and a floating point core, both sharing resources and the module itself handles 2 threads. its like all 8 cores of the fx 8350 are like intel's hyperthreaded cores where they arent real cores.  the module handles 2 threads, just like a hyperthreaded core of intel, although one on the intel side is a physical core while on the amd design, both are "virtual". and depending what calculations each core handles for the games,  varies as each calculation is different.  so the game will require as many as the design calls for. like GTA 5 is a 4 core game where all 4 cores are used, yet not to 100% because they are all handling different tasks such as the physics, gpu calls, etc. the straight performance of each core is more important than how many cores there are because the faster 1 single core is, the more calculations it can handle in its own task, separate from the other, and hence, the game runs faster.  thats why in games, single core performance is much more important than all core performance. now to the % value you see in task manager. that is representative of how much work the core is doing. lets say 60% of a core is used, then 60% of the time, that core is doing something and 40% it is idling. since tasks are separated to the cores, a task cant just be handed of to a non used core because thats not how game engines are made to run.  so its spreading out the workload as much as it was designed for. if the issue is that frames are being dropped, its because there are too many gpu calls and the cpu cant keep up with the gpu performance, your issue. the cpu isnt able to keep up, so its falling behind, causing certain frames to be rendered a little later, cause lower framerate and lag. 

 

if this all confused you, heres a tl;dr: you need to go to intel because they have faster single cores which certain tasks can better utilize.

 

modern cpus are insanely  complex and sorry for any confusion, i tried to explain it to the best of my ability
