Possible Overheating Problem

So yesterday I installed a new 650W power supply and an EVGA SuperClocked GTX 970. Today, my PC randomly turned off during the download of a game. I tried to turn it back on and as soon as it got to the Windows menu, it turned back off. I opened up the case and saw that the PSU had "eco mode" turned on, I turned this off, plugged it all back up and finished downloading the game. I then played a few games for about 2-3 hours and it was all running fine.

Just a few minutes ago, it switched off randomly again. I decided to take the PC out and see how hot it was, I felt the power supply, where the fan is, and the body of the power supply, it was warm, not hot. I then touched the GPU and it was very hot on the chipboard side. Is my problem the GPU or PSU? I originally thought it was the PSU, since the eco mode fixed my problem for a long time, and long durations of gaming didn't trouble the PC. Now, I'm not so sure.

I've now moved the PC from underneath the desk, where it was placed in a box like area and it's now on top of my desk, where there's a lot of space. Hopefully this will fix it, but if not...

How can I check if overheating is my problem? And what can I do to fix it? I really don't want to resort to water cooling. Let's say overheating isn't my issue, what else could it be?

Best regards,

Tom

Eco mode is just having the fan off when under little load which is perfectly fine. How to check for overheating? Whilst in windows, get open hardware monitor and get the GPU temps from there.

The fact that it was under your desk might have been an issue, it can severely limit the general flow of air through the machine. Is your PSU fan facing into the case or out of the bottom of the chassis through a dust filter?

Bottom, through the dust filter.

That was most likely the issue then. Especially if your floor is carpeted.
