So for Christmas I purchased an Asus 25" 1080p IPS monitor (he does a lot of computer work). Connecting the panel to his laptop runs the screen at the resolution no problem, it fits the screen and everything. However, in order to get his desktop that I recently built for him to fit the screen, I have to change the resolution to 2560x1440, which is not a supported resolution for this panel. At 1080p however, there is about a half inch border of nothing around the screen. For a little more information, the graphics card that is in this desktop is an XFX Radeon R7 260X, connected to the monitor via HDMI cable. Any idea why this could be?

It's called underscan, a setting enabled by default to compensate for stupidity in how TVs handle signals. When you use a 1080p display over HDMI it assumes you're using a TV. Go to AMD catalyst control center:

I found that and tried it, but unfortunately even at 0% overscan it's still got about a quarter inch border

Yes the checkbox is unchecked. I even put the monitor to overscan mode and it still had a border

I see. AMD overhauled their driver/settings package recently, I'll take a closer look and see if I can find the solution.
