So i just made a huge mistake by installing windows 10 HOME instead of the free version!

V.Story.V

So i yesterday i was done with my build and i wanted to Install  windows and i stumbled uppon one of linus/NCIX Videos about installing windows from your USB. Here is the video

In the video they showed how to install WINDOWS 8.1 Version BUT i thought to myself why not do the same way but with windows 10 instead... SO I DID IT! And what i didn't notice was that in the setup they told me that i need a product key BEFORE i  install windows 10 on my pc. I was like pffftttt i don't need a product key! and i moved forward with the setup. One day later then i mean today i noticed that i couldn't perzonalize anything so i was like. What the HECK!. I spend like 20 min in the settings and i found this...

you need to activate windows before you can personalize your pc

*FACEPALM*

So now i don't know what to?

Should i delete my windows 10 in some way and install windows 8.1 and then install windows 10 for free... BUT HOW!

Hey, there is no "free" version of windows 10. If you already upgraded to windows 10 from 8 or 7 on a PC, you can reinstall windows 10 with no problem. I talked to a microsoft rep about this the other day. He said in update 1155 for windows 10 you can use windows 7/8 keys to activate it. I'm not 100% about this, but I don't know why he would lie. If you have no key at all. You will have to get one.

You can always activate it illegally, but I don't recommend that.

As @4nth0ny6 said. Though this is an oem so if you upgrade your motherboard I think you need a new one.

If you still have your key from your legitimate version of 8.1 then you can reinstall and then upgrade to Windows 10.... like you are suppose to do the first time. After that you can go straight ahead and install a fresh Windows 10 and your key will now work.

Windows 10 keys here are very cheap ($15-25);

I have used it before and its trustworthy.

I doesn't work, because you didn't upgrade your windows 7/8 license prior to upgrading. Simply reinstall your old OS, with the old key, and upgrade that installation. After that, you can make a clean install.

My parents use a laptop with windows 8.1 or from right now windows 10... is there a way to find the product key on the laptop?
