Testing a Refurb. gtx 980

Go to solution Solved by jvo33,

thanks for all the tips guys! i did NOT know that furmark was known to kill cards at all. Everything works fine so far. Too bad they couldn't tell me exactly what the card was RMA'd for. Could have been a DVI issue for all that matters... for now i'll just enjoy this beastly card at a great price. :D

Hi there Linus forum!

I recently saw an Asus Strix edition gtx 980 on clearance + clearance sale at Memory Express and after all was said and done picked it up for 380$ which in my mind was a killer deal! I have never purchased an RMA refurbished GPU before , and had to pounce on this amazing deal because I may never see a 980 at this price anytime soon.

To get straight to the point, I have a 7 day return policy where I get a full refund on the card. After that I have 60 days warranty on the card.

I want to test this card in the 7 days to make sure its FULLY working and good to go and possibly return it if there are any issues. The guy at Memory Express told me that warranty can take anywhere between 3-4 months if I were to send it off within the 60 day warranty time limit if something is wrong.

Any tips on how I can test out this gpu? I've run the Heaven benchmark, and tested with furmark as well. No problems so far.

Any words of wisdom would be highly appreciated! Thanks guys. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping nothing is wrong with this card. :D

In all honesty, if synthetics run ok, just try playing games on it, considering thats most of what you will be doing on it (I assume)

DO NOT run furmark! It is a known card killer. Don't know why people keep using it. It places an extremely high load on the GPU - far more demanding than any game will ever be - so it's an unrealistic test.

The best test is to run the most demanding games you have for several hours, non-stop. If all is well, then chances are there's nothing wrong with it. ;)

I too, recently picked up a 980 Strix for a good deal ($530 CAD/ $395 USD) on amazon.ca. Item description claimed "refurbished - open box, some accessories missing." Turns out the card was still brand new, never used and as far as I can tell, nothing was actually missing from the box. ;)

Run Furmark for an hour straight.  If it can't manage that, it's not worth the money.

Okay, I am so confused... to run Furmark or not?

Anyways, back to OP, try running game benchmarks like the ones on Shadows of Mordor, GTA V, Metro (which Metro was it?), and so on as well.

AMD VS Nvidia = A lost mail man that will do whatever it takes to give you your mail... despite being a few days late... and never realizing that the house that the mail is for was pretty much the first house he started from VS A well dressed, well groomed, well cleaned, and cologned-up donger that just wiggles itself and is the type of guy that makes after-parties a nightmare. Basically its: An idiot that tries VS a jerk that ruins every after-party. Pick your poison.

If you run furmark for an hour straight, you're asking for a dead card. Plain and simple.

DO NOT run firmark if you value the life of your GPU. Simple as that. It puts an unrealistic load on the GPU and has been known to kill cards. It's not worth it. Do not run it.

Test it under real-world loads and conditions. Play the most demanding games you have. That is the best, safest test you can perform.

If it has been known to kill cards, it's not good and shouldn't be run. Why take the risk on a brand new card? I don't see the point.

Assuming the Strix cooler actively cools the VRMs by contact and with thermal pads/paste, and you have a quality PSU, you can safely run Furmark for an hour without any risk of damaging the card. Otherwise run Unigine Valley for a couple of hours.

I think you can monitor the VRM temps of that card, Asus recommends a maximum temperature of 110 degrees Celsius for the VRMs.
