Upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10?

Has anyone here upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10? Are there any differences in speed and reliability in terms of real-world performance? Does the upgrade slow your PC down? I have a 2600K and 7970 with 16GB of RAM. I'm not sure if upgrading is worth it in case there are bugs and other performance issues.

Do a clean install so you're not carrying shit over from win7 with you. As for the performance I'd say its the same not faster nor slower. Most of the bugs have been worked out by now I run it flawlessly on my laptop but you should expect a driver issue or two which is normal.

Yes, Upgrade you pc to Windows 10! It has a nice design and it's faster.

I have done it and haven't had any issues. The only thing that annoys me is the fact you can't drag windows easily to another monitor. If you do it slow it's like dragging them to the side of a 1 monitor setup. If you drag them fast it doesn't snap, but it's a struggle sometimes.

Don't do it. I get crashes at least once per day with windows 10.

I don't really want to do a clean install, will this affect performance a lot?

I went from 7 to 10 about 2 weeks ago. Did not do a clean install, have had no issues or degradation. I have, however, disabled Cortana and multiple other 'features'.

Yes there is a difference, notably in boot times, but the OS just seems to be more stable, speedy and nicer to use, although I hate the new control panel thing, although you can still get the old one also.

Just do a fresh install, Windows has issues with upgrading its self, you normally have to remake your user because it screws it up somewhere.

Plus its now in black, looks a lot better in black

Is better for me, also if you want to upgrade to window 10 you should clean install so that problem from Windows 7 won't carry over to window 10

Yes It will wipe out all data on your c :

It will remove the link so you'll need to relink it

So I have to uninstall all the games on my secondary storage drive before doing a clean install of Windows? How about programs such as Word and Photoshop that are installed on a drive other than the OS drive? Will those work properly after a clean install?

You will not have to reinstall all the games completely. Because they should remain unaffected, since they are on a separate drive.

When you go to reinstall the games, you will want to select the same folder you have the files in already, and it should simply fix the registry links, because the data is already there. Steam will be different! If you are using Steam, then you MUST use the backup and restore feature within Steam, otherwise you will be forced to re-download everything anyway (I just learned this last night after migrating to a new SSD boot device, and not doing proper research beforehand.) Just google "Steam Backup and Restore."

 

As far as Word and Photoshop...

You will need to reinstall anything that you have on your C drive if you opt for a clean install. Windows 10 will not format your drive! Instead, it saves the old OS in a "Windows.old" folder, which takes up space. So, again, when you go to reinstall these programs, it should be relatively quick, since all the files will still be there. So, the only thing you really need to worry about is saving backups of all your savegame files, so you can put them in the proper locations after the upgrade has been done.

 

Windows 10 did run a lot faster than Windows 7 did on the laptop I just sold. It had an i7, Nvidia GeForce GT 540m, 8GB RAM, with a 750GB MHDD.

I ran Windows 10 on it for about 4 months, and had no real issues.

 

That all said... If you have an Nvidia graphics card... DO NOT UPGRADE!!!!!!

Nvidia simply cannot get their shit together with Windows 10. Probably because they insist on releasing these "Driver Suites" instead of a separate driver for each chipset.

 

I am seriously considering switching to AMD in January because of all the driver problems with my GTX 960.

Windows 10 boots up a few seconds faster than Windows 7, but it isn't faster in application performance, and generally is not faster in gaming performance. Some games will experience an increase in FPS in Windows 7 over Windows 10, and others will experience an increase in performance in Windows 10 over Windows 7. Generally, for gaming, the fastest to slowest list of Windows OSes goes: Windows 8(.1), Windows 7, Windows 10.

 

With applications, some things take longer to load in Windows 10 than in Windows 7, such as the calculator app, the photo app, and applications in general have slightly better performance in Windows 7 than in Windows 10.

Windows 10 actually works great when clean install, as upgrade carries problem from the previous os to windows 10, i've upgraded to windows 10 and I need to clean install because it carries problem from Windows 8.1. Also for your information windows 10 removes games that comes with Windows 7 but there's a way to install it back

I don't think that there is any particular reason to upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1 to Windows 10. You lose some major features, gain some frills, lose privacy, lose control, don't gain any performance (except a few seconds of boot time)... and pretty much every notable game engine will support Vulkan, so DirectX 12 likely isn't going to have an advantage.

In my experience the upgrade is very varied. I've seen PCs that still work fine and others that become slow and crash-y or even unbootable. While I think severe issues are very uncommon it appears that upgrading a less-that-healthy PC will certainly make it worse.

 

As for if you need to upgrade, I think you should ask yourself that question. Do some research and figure out if you want the new UI. Other than that there aren't many huge changes. DirectX 12 may also lead to you want the upgrade (as well as the fact that you won't have the option for free in a few months).

 

For completeness I will answer your question about a clean install.

I have Windows 10 on my laptop (I upgraded from Windows 8) and to be honest I prefer the UI of Windows 7. The flat colors and lack of Aero glass make Windows 10 look extremely ugly imo. The only reason to upgrade would be DirectX 12, but there aren't even any games I know of that fully support it right now.

I did this and I am running window 7. It is not worth it at all and it broke most steam games and programs not to mention all the spyware microsoft puts in it and memory leaks everywhere. it is a load or garbage stay with 7 and use Vulkan when it comes out

I did this and I am running window 7. It is not worth it at all and it broke most steam games and programs not to mention all the spyware microsoft puts in it and memory leaks everywhere. it is a load or garbage stay with 7 and use Vulkan when it comes out

What exactly is Vulkan? I've never heard of it, gonna Google it now.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

As with all things, there's no real guarantee that AAA games will make use of Vulkan (despite it being dumb for them not to) so one cannot simply rely on that to solve all their problems. There will eventually come a time when Windows 7 is not supported and games won't run properly on it. For now though, since that time is likely years off, there are no significant advantages to upgrading to Windows 10. I actually prefer 10 over 7, but YMMV.

 

It's a personal choice, really. Go use a computer with Windows 10 for a while and decide for yourself which one you prefer.

 

But, seriously, Nvidia and Windows 10... No.
