1x8GB

Why?...

Is it better to get 2x 4gb sticks of ram or 1 stick of 8gb of ram?

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/6Njk23  -THIS IS MY BUILD.

Would it benefit me if i use dual channel config? Many thanks!

Get the 2 ram module kit, if one dies you can pull one out to rule it out. If you only have one DIMM and it dies, then you cannot fault find as the system won't post.

because he will be limited to max 16GB with 2x4GB ram.

That isn't a bad thing, unless you're video editing etc there is no need for more than 16gb.

I't will be bad if games start using recommended RAM of 16GB or more. CoD BO3 laready recommends 12GB same as Batman. More games will follow.

I will bet you £10 that 32gb requirements are 2-4 years away and that's on the highest recommended. Don't be a noob, 16Gb is plenty. Also with DDR3 dropping heavily in price, if you're so worried about the OP being limited tell him to buy 2x8gb sticks...

if he buys 1x8GB now, he can buy another 1x8GB which is 2x8GB i believe.. And the OP will not notice much difference with 2x4GB anyways. And like you said, DDR3 is dropping heavily in price so he can buy another one if the RAM dies.

1 8GB so you can upgrade.

Considering a lot of us actually utilize more than 16GB, this isn't a blanket acceptabce.

I have 16gb myself, I've yet to use more that 60% of it unless I'm doing loads of things at once with 2 chrome windows open with loads of tabs, games never tax my ram. Most people only build with 8gb then upgrade to 16, 32gb right now is pointless unless you're actually using it for rendering etc.

But he won't be able to pull the stick out to test it... been there done that, wasn't worth the headache... Just buy a 2x8gb set of 1600mhz ram, job done.

Do a Memory test. Otherwise try out another RAM stick and see if the problem is solved. I wouldn't buy 1x8GB anyway but if he has a budget what can i do about it. I would prefer 2x8GB like i have in one of my builds. If he could he should buy 2x8GB if not go for 1x8GB it's only $35 and it will get cheaper eventually.

I dunno about you but, taking the side off my case and pulling out one stick of ram to see which is dead (or it would boot to windows anyway...) versus finding a USB then installing memtest on it, then leaving it to do it's thing etc is a lot of wasted time. If you're seriously that skint for RAM then sure get the one stick, but once it lets out its magic smoke you're a bit stuck. If OP can only afford one stick go nuts, buy 4 of them and it cost more in the long run lol.

If you know one of your rams is dead you need to buy another one anyway. If the RAM is the problem in the pc and you have 1x8GB it's simple. Take it out buy another one and done.

It depends on how long you need to wait

You can order more ram while your other set is off for RMA. I have 2 systems and a laptop, I have 3x 2x4gb kits knocking around but if you're really unlucky and can't afford $40 for a replacement kit then you'll just have to wait a week or two tops for the RMA to return. When you build PC's for family and friends you soon build up a parts catalog lol.
