ATT (or other carrier) Signal Booster

Does anyone have any experience with Cellular signal boosters that could shed some light on my current predicament?

I'm looking into getting one for my parent's for Christmas, they live in the middle of nowhere and get terrible reception with ATT. I would need one that covers ~5000sq.ft. (house + front and back yard). As I understand it the signal strength required for that kind of coverage is about the max the FCC will allow.

Assuming I could find a device like that in the $300-500 price range, did your carrier give you any flak, or did it cost any monthly maintenance fee on your bill in order to use it? That would be a non-starter given the insane initial cost.

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.
