My brother is looking for a laptop and has narrowed his choice down to these two.

MSI, I've had really good experience with their laptops. I have a very similar one to the one your brother is considering and it's served me well.

Pro Tip: don't use flash when taking pictures of your build; use a longer exposure instead. Prop up your camera with something (preferably a tripod) if necessary.

if you use retarded/autistic/etc to mean stupid please gtfo

the dell will be better

the MSI has single band WiFi

also the Dell is using a newer Skylake CPU which save more power than the 5xxx series

I would go with the Dell laptop because after looking at both, the Dell laptop uses a 6th Generation Intel Core i7 processor and the MSI uses a 5th gen processor.

Also, the Dell laptop appears to be much cheaper just without the vast illumination.

If you are a diehard lights person and you love the keyboard, it might be worth getting the MSI, but that's up to the consumer's taste.

I would go with the MSI. Just can't stand Dell. Thought the dell has slightly better specs the MSI laptop is almost the same price and is much better looking.

The dell's processor might have a slight edge. I would compare thermal design at this rate. Which one runs cooler.

CPU - FX 8350 @ 4.5GHZ GPU - Radeon 5700  Mobo - M5A99FX Pro R2.0 RAM - Crucial Ballistix 16GB @ 1600 PSU - Corsair CX600M CPU Cooler - Hyper 212 EVO Storage - Samsung EVO 250GB, WD Blue 1TB

Neither: laptop gaming shouldn't be a thing.

I'm kidding, of course, let's get into this.

A little word of warning on both of these systems: the 960M is actually pretty underpowered (had a friend learn this the hard way, granted I don't look in the mobile market much so possibly I have no idea what I'm talking about in perspective of price ranges for GPUs. Mobile chips are obviously not the best in the world, but the 960M was completely wrecked by the 970M. The same story goes for the 980M. I don't know what your workload is for the machine (games, obviously; which ones and what is your goal of settings?).

If you intend to just kind of play games and don't care all that much about visual settings, the 960M is perfectly okay. If you're a flashy-chassis kind of guy/gal, pick the MSI laptop. However, do note that, for some reason, the MSI laptop has only 2GB of VRAM, while the Dell laptop has 4GB of VRAM. Again, this might mean something to you if you're going to try and play triple-A titles at Ultra.

I find that the CPU will likely not matter as much during most games (again, this is just if you're playing "any old game"), but in the event you are looking for the best CPU, get the Dell laptop. It won't be a landslide of a difference, but if you're looking for every ounce of performance, knock your socks off and get the Dell.

Someone also mentioned the MSI laptop doesn't support dual-band wireless. If that means anything to you, you'll be able to make the decision on your own. I won't bother explaining it (TechQuickie has something on it, I think).

Personally, I would go with the Dell laptop. I tried to weigh some things out for you, but I find the Dell laptop would be the better deal. I have some previous experience with Dell and they have some pretty stellar customer support (for warranties, anyway). You're spending a rather significant chunk of change on the flashiness of the MSI laptop, so it's up to you if you want better peformance or better looks.

tl;dr better performance = Dell laptop; better looks = MSI laptop
