So I have a PC with the following specs (used to be my first desktop):

Athlon 7750 Black Edition

4GB DDR2

HP OEM AM2+ (I think it's made by ASUS)

PNY GT 610

220W TFX PSU (OEM from HP)

320GB Fujitsu HDD

All on a piece of plywood for a case.

Anyway, I have a much more powerful desktop now, as you can see in my signature. I'd like to do something with the old PC, which is in my room underneath my TV. I thought about turning it into a streaming PC so I can play some casual games from bed, but I'm not sure how well it would handle that. I couldn't get the damn thing to install SteamOS, so I'd like to see what you guys think I should do with the PC. Leave a reply if you have an idea. Thanks!

Have a Good Network Card.

Your Opinion of Powerful astounds me.

I meant powerful in comparison to the old pile of crap I used to have. A 290 is pretty decent isn't it?

Forgot to mention, my current PC is hardwired to my router, but the 'streaming PC' uses a Rosewill USB wireless adapter.

Linux mint with a steam application works great. Really no need for SteamOS for streaming.

Or, do what I'm doing now and make it into a home file server.

if you cant get steamos to work, install your linux flavor of choice, and install steam on top, set steam to start up on system start, and start in big picture.

if you do it on top of debian, you basicly have steamOS.

EDIT: should mention thats how i do it, because i cant get the steam installer to work reliably either. (may be because of my toaster hardware tho)

I previously had Ubuntu installed, and I couldn't even launch Steam without it crashing.

Yeah but folks round here get a bit itchy about people calling 'lesser' builds "beast" or "Over powered". Don't take it personaly when people who operate on a different price scale call your awesome PC 'low end'

It's a mentality that only scares away more people from building their own but is sadly ingrained deeply. Mid-high setting 1080p 60fps is a descent PC but is often being called low end

I max out everything at 1080p with around 80-90 average FPS. I modded my 290 with a custom 390X BIOS and OC'd it to 1100/1350MHz with +85mV on the core. The only thing about my PC that's not 'beastly' is the i3 but I plan on swapping that out with a Xeon E3-1231v3 pretty soon, and the 500GB HDD with a 1TB 850 EVO.

And the 290 is beastly for me specifically, I don't need anything more powerful. Maybe a 290X or 390X, but meh.

And I, personally, would call that high end. 270x mid and 750ti low. Anything>390X is enthusiast in my mind because your no longer operating with reasonable 1080p and is more suited to 1440p+.

But others would put 960 as the mid, 270x as low and 980ti* as high end.

Still though, my 290 is a bit faster than a 390 so it's not like it's THAT far from a 980 (although it would be noticeably better).

I was expecting a titan X to be completely honest. It is a pretty boss pc.

You said over powered. So I thought hey this dude has a titan X

Oh, he said overpowered. I said it was pretty powerful compared to what a lot of people have, and especially compared to the specs in my OP. If a Titan X is overpowered, then I completely agree with you.

That is still subjective though. For gaming yes, but not for graphical design or other CPU intensive workloads.

I only do some PS and CAD work, even then I don't that nearly as much as I game. So a less powerful CPU isn't so bad. Still, I want a Xeon to bring a bit of balance.

Why are you talking about yourself in third person. Aren't you OP? I currently have a 980Ti. I still dont feel my 980Ti is over powered

I am, but by OP I meant my Original Post. Not OP as a person. And for me, I think a 980 Ti is way more power than I need. Honestly the most power I'd ever need (right now) is a 390X, which my 290 isn't far from. Still, it's a very, very nice card and I wouldn't complain about it if I owned one xD
