Ugh. McAfee is a cancerous tumor. Get rid of it ASAP.

Hell, MSE is a better option than that POS "antivirus"

Classic Malware infection

Classic McCrap failing again..

As other have said, get a better antivirus.  McAfee is living on its reputation from the 90s.  They haven't been a decent antivirus company in decades.

No, the spyware is making it act up

McAfee is the lazy security guard who isn't doing anything about the kids vandalizing the building.

I've used Windows Defender since my first pc and it's removed every virus I've ever had.

Chalk it up to good luck then.  But it doesn't change the fact that WD fails miserably in detection tests done by independent reviewers and falls far below other free options, like Avast.

Take some reviewers that are probably paid to rate highly. Or take the word of a humbly member of LTT.

Or

"Take the experience that has been replicated dozens of times.  Or take the experience that occurred for one person."

That isn't the only horrific review of windows defender by far.  In fact, I would challenge you to find a single positive review from any reputable independent site of windows defender.

The problem is that Security Essentials can’t offer real peace of mind. While the latest update has managed to improve threat detection, in our tests Mirosoft Security Essentials was still compromised by 32% of threats

Yup, doesn't change the fact someone would have given it a thumbs up at some reputable PC news/information source.  As I said, fine ONE independent test that shows it.

Yes, biased reviews exist.  But there are plenty of good sites that review things objectively.  And NO ONE has ever accused windows defender of being anything more than mediocre protection.

Not to mention, Windows Defender is usually enabled by default, and yet OP still has viruses.  So didn't do anything to solve OP's problem now did it?  Also doesn't bode well for its effectiveness either.

You kinda have to hit the scan button to find viruses... Either way I won't change. I recommend to OP to use Windows Defender.

Yeah, there's this thing called real-time protection that is supposed to scan processes and files as they are used.  Guess Microsoft hasn't gotten around to including that feature thats been an anti-virus standard for decades......

Go for it OP, I'm interested to see if it actually does anything for your computer.

If my computer runs slow I run a scan. Real time doesn't matter. However the best option is to not download sketchy stuff.

Real-time absolutely matters.  Extremely devious malware after it makes it's way on to your system can alter the definition files of your malware protection, rendering it useless and making it really hard to install new anti-malware. Every virus I've had in the last 10 years has been caught by real-time protection.  I haven't found one in a scan in years.

And again, were talking about tech support for a relative.  If it was as easy as telling your parents not to download sketchy stuff, then you probably wouldn't have to provide tech support for relatives at all.

Welp I've maybe gotten 4 "serious" viruses in my life. All I've ever used in Windows Defender. We'll have to agree to disagree as now I am going to bed.

Online scan/clean for present malware .

Then delete MacAfee (even if it bleats about "you still have a subscription")

Insert a real time anti virus scanner (opinions vary as to what's the best just install whatever gets the best reviews that day[ there are a gazzillion and one free programs out there] Avira, AVG etc)

Also do a now and again scan with an anti malware program (say the free version of Malwarebytes or Panda online or...).

Easier said than done but get your aunt to follow good downloading habits , don't download unsolicited files, don't download "cute" emoticon packs, ensure the senders address etc

(I have been online for about fifteen years and have never had a virus and I only run MS defender/MS security essentials and scan now and again with Malwarebytes [used to run AVG and Avira but I found them too much of resource hogs or didn't like the pop-ups or ...and basically never got a true positive ] so now it is only MSdefender [maybe fairly lax but it is small.).

I just suggest removing the MacAfee and replacing it with MalwareBytes and Avast, i use both, Avast as an active protection and MalwareBytes as a removal and second opinion sort of deal as some anti viruses cant detect some viruses or other infections, its always good to have a back up. Once you've done all that run a scan with MB and remove all malicious files, and do the same with Avast just to clean up the trash a bit. Also just a tip for the future, teach your aunt about proper computer habits and tell her not to install things that look very shady, also if you ever think a file is sketchy, run it through VirusTotal, it tests the file with basically ever anti virus ever! Great huh?

i would also suggest installing an adblocker for her. i know some people lose revenue for it, but its better that she doesnt see and thus risk clicking on random ads on facebook, that have a higher chance of infecting your computer than a porn site
